rear disc set up

  1. If i wanted to change to rear discs what is the most commonly used /best caliper /disc combo . currently have 944 stuff up front and the rear would need to be 130 pcd which is not a problem as i would make the hub and associated brackets from scratch . No real need for it just fancy it ...

  2. 944 rear on my van...

you need a pair of prototype bay rear drums to machine down for the hubs though!! :)

  3. why do you need eary hubs to machine down ? I guess its so you can use the spline and redrill for the 130pcd .? I was more thinking like a 944 front hub but splined and using modern calipers with hand brake ? I only have the single pot front calipers and your back brakes look beter than my front ;D I want to manufacture all of it bar calipers . Using 15" fuchs as well hence the single pot fronts .do you have a pic of the back ? and i guess i`d have to use a 944 master cylinder ?

  4. creative engineering do a off the shelf 5x130 pcd late bay hub that swaps like for like with oe 112 hub if that helps?

i used mk4 golf alloy rear calipers on the rear of the split and will be using them again on the bay when i get that far light weight, low profile give good wheel clearance (i ran 15" gas burners with 280mm disks) loads of performance pads if needed, easy to mount, cheap as chips, easy to find in scrap yards, handbrake lever on caliper whats not to like ;)

  5. I take it you mean front?? as that is the back ;)

This is from when the van was first converted to 944 turbo

I've got servo brakes from factory, and the bus servo MC is bigger, so it handles the 944 brembos fine :)

You'll have to stick with the single pots, as the brembos need 16in wheels..

yeah, the hubs on the LB are a little too small to take the 5x130 pcd, so early drums machined into hubs then drilled for 5x130 :)
i think I looked at the creative 5x130 hubs.. aren't they a fair whack of cash?

  6. ;Dno i meant back ... as in caliper bracket :)

Creative rear 130 are about £280 thats why i made my own about 3 years ago for £0 but i used bolts instead of studs to help with removing wheels . Machining the spline is not a problem . I also have factory servo brakes so is there no need to change master cylinder ?. do early axles have a different spline or is it just the length ?. I used mild steel before but thought about stainless or aircraft grade alloy ?

loads of questions i know ....

any links or pics of the golf calipers ...

  7. communication error!! ;)

My bracket is just a piece of 8/10mm steel that is welded to the bearing housing!!

You can kinda see it in this pic

I also had to make a 6mm spacer to go behind my hub to space the disk out for the handbrake shoes to work correctly... as the guy who did the brake conversion originally made a right balls up of it!!

the splines are the same on early axles, but the internal spacers are different..

  8. I don`t know why but i thought the bearing housing was cast iron .( probably because i hit a drain and smashed the shock off once )

  9. my caliper mounting plates are 10mm but is bolted on with 3x 12.9 grade 1x m8 at top and 2x m10's at the bottom if that helps?

  10. Hi Paul,

Out of interest does that Porsche 944 caliper that you are using on the rear have an integrated Handbrake mechanism? if not how have you incorporated a handbrake?

If I understand you correctely, you have got hold of a rear brake setup from an prototype bay, removed the drum and shoes, then machined down the hub to fit inside the disc. to offset the disc you have then placed a spacer between the hub and the disc and redrilled for 130PCD. you have then made a bracket to bolt the caliper to?

i have something very similar to this. i have machined down my hubs, fitted a 112PCD disc, then used an adaptor plate to space out my wheel and change the pcd to porsche. i have used an astra sxi cast caliper which has integrated handbrake.

  11. mine uses porsche disks that have an internal drum handbrake

  12. soz mate i dont understand what you are saying. if you have porsche discs and porsche calipers on the rear, what does your original handbrake cable connect to? i dont understand how you have the internal drum brake if you dont have the drum anymore

  13.
  14. so you brake shoes from the drum setup are still used, but now when you use the handbrake it actually causes the shoes to push out and push against the inside face of the disc?

EDIT: i think i've worked it out now :) you have fitted the complete rear porsche brake with porsche hub and this slides onto the vw spline ??

  15.
  16. secret squirrel then hey ;)

  17.
  18. hehe, so much for the friendly forum environment :p hehe just kidding. i'm sticking for with my setup for the time being, but would like to get my bus on 4 porsche calipers long term

need to get the bus driving first before i can use the brakes :)

  19. All seriousness though, it is something that I want to add to my parts portfolio... Once I have it sorted it'll all be bolt on, so no welding a mount on for the caliper

  20. last question paul,,,the machined down earl y bay drum hub is that what you can see on yourset up or is the hub inside the disc and that is a wheel spacer ?. I looked on wagenwest`s site and couldn`t figure out how they used a forged hub orwhat it was off ?
