You needed to transfer some parts from your old shoes, press fit with a vice and use proper horseshoe clips to hold it together.

  2. Ok will do, thanks. Will get right shoes and try again.

Bloody waste of a day that was.... :(

You learned a valuable lesson? Don't try and ram the wrong parts into your brakes.
It'll all turn out well in the end and you did the right thing posting a picture of your installation for scrutiny rather than blithly setting off down the road, because I'm pretty sure that would have affected the brakes as well as the handbrake and the unscrewing bolt was an accident waiting to happen.
I'm not great with words, but the last thing I would like is to appear that I'm chastising you in any way. Far from it, you have done the right thing, questioned what you did, posted a pic and will end up with it all sorted.

  4. I'm slightly confused by the shoes. I bought the one correct for my 72 but perhaps I should gone with what's was already in there, which are the 73 onwards.

  6. Your instinct to replace with same part you took off is most likely the best bet ,
And not to say it again , but the wheel cylinder is obviously leaking ,
Youll be back in there before you know it , stopping power will suffer from a leaking cylinder ,
It get air in it and loses considerable pressure even the smallest amount of air ....
They are cheap online but pricey in a store,,,

  7. Got the right brakes and all fitted properly and a handbrake that now works. Thank you all for your support as always.

Question. Trying to gauge how much tension the drum should have whilst adjusting. Should it move quite freely? Should I feel it rubbing?

With hbrake cables loose, wheel off ground adjust until it binds then back a few, you don't want the shoes rubbing.
Then and only then adjust the handbrake cables.
If the hbrake cable don't go loose, loosen them before you adjust the shoes the readjust after. Most important. Thereon in if your handbrake comes further and further out of the dash, you know it's time to adjust the shoes again which will automatically tighten up the handbrake too.

  9. Adjust till it locks up then back off a few turns

  10. Brakes adjusted and all working well. Thanks everyone who helped me again.
