Re registration of number plate

  1. Having recently completed the resto of our 1975/76 tin top we are hoping to get a new reg number. The van was imported from Ireland we believe in 1984 so currently has a Y reg.

Does anyone know whether it is just a case of buying an authentic number or can you apply to dvla for a free allocation?

When mine was imported, you had to take proof of age and we were allocated an appropriate number...in my case Dec 72, so L plate.
You are different in that you already have an allocated reg number and want to change to an earlier one ... def DVLA
Involvement..... you could always buy a non prefix one, which I thought were Irish anyway..... but DVLA would still be involved.

  3. I seem to remember it works along the lines of buying a private plate , you buy the plate and the DVLA charge you around £80 To alter the paperwork .
Should be easier if you just want a random age related plate .
Mines a '75 Dutch postal van , imported and converted in 79 which gives it a 'V' plate - don't think it matters to be honest , it's all part of the colourful history most old vehicles have .

  4. Mine was imported in 1982 and was put on an X plate sent off to the DVLA for an age related plater as it was a 1973 they put it on a M plate now no cost involved just called them and sent the details they asked for.

  5. Thanks both. As you say Lasty we can buy one for about £50 plus dvla charge so might be easier - but maybe we do just leave it alone. (Think ours started out as a postal van too).
