Quick help! engine mounted coil pack - securing bolt size?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by BeulahThe78Bay, Jul 29, 2022.

  1. So doing my post trip engine checks and found the coil pack at some point (i imagine due to lovely motorway pot holes) had come loose from its mounting bracket. All intact and engine running lovely but the nut, which I guess has vibrated loose and was checked at start of summer, is now nowhere to be found....

So 1) any concerns about further running with the fan (no evidence of damage) or the fact I cant find the bolt?

Or 2) does anyone offhand know the size and type of this bolt to aid replacing?

    Coil pack?
Maybe you could tell us what engine you have for starters?
I'm guessing it's a type-1 1600 and you mean the clamping bolt on the bracket?
It's nothing special, have a root round in your odds and sods tin. :)

The bolt is most likely either on the road or if lucky .. wedged somewhere external to the engine. If it came near the fan on your [assume T4] engine it would have fired off somewhere pretty fast.

And if it came loose then a combination of vibration and it not being done up in the first place let it go..

Fortunately the coil doesnt need an "earth" as thats provided by the 12 volt ignition supply.

    Picture helps.

Sounds like a type 4, M8 is the size I think.

  6. Shock horror….Mystery question stumps experts!!! I’m guessing it’s not a type 4. It would be pretty obvious. Maybe I’m a bit odd but I can’t recall ever driving my bus any distance without a quick peek in the engine bay first. (And checking the oil level) Always useful as there’s a whole little world of stuff going on in there just waiting to do something interesting when you least expect it!

T4 coil bracket is held in place with an M6 bolt threaded into the fan case!

  7. We don’t know if it’s a Westy or a Devon either cos that’s dead useful when trying to diagnose peoples engine problems

  9. It’s probably caused by water in the glove box! Common fault!

as he says the nut has fallen off I think he's trying to describe this.

  11. If bits are randomly falling off it's definitely a Devon.....
