Beastie finally arrived. A replacement for the other Powerlite that was not correct for my 3 rib gearbox. This RAC525 should do the trick. Looks nicely made and pinion length is the same as the old Bosch this time

CoolAir were great, just exchanged it, only had to pay for postage

    Has to be something though:

it starts really well none of the original issue at all, but there is a little groan at the end of starting, just when you’d release the key. I guess this is the pinion a little slow to retract. Not going to worry too much about this.
2nd is an annoyance - so how close up the 17mm nut is to the body, I can’t really get the spanner round it from either way round. Any ideas here?

  11. You can get m10 nuts with a 16mm head. As used on Japanese cars.

Nice idea, but if you see the picture, the 17mm nut actually just touches the body of the motor, so no chance of getting anything all the way round

May be the slight grunt at the end of key turn is the pinion slow to retract and maybe this is because I can not fully tighten the bottom starter nut, because of the poor purchase issue. Slight misalignment?

    16mm M10 bolt should sort it ;)

I think the original vw nut was a m10, 15mm spanner size.

M10 15mm hex all seem to have a wider flange part.

VW heritage should do the job with M10 16mm
