Plugs look a bit black??

  1. Hi all
As mentioned in my earlier thread about starting my bus, I have just fitted weber 34 ICTs to my 1700 type 4.
The bus starts, runs and drives fine, pulls great.. but I thought I would take the plugs out and take a look.
They do look a bit black & 'oily' - not wet, but not dry & sooty.
    What do you reckon?
Are they OK, or suggest the bus us running a bit rich?
If so, shall I try winding the mixture screws out a quarter of a turn each, or do I need to replace the f78 emulsion tubes with F6's.. or a trip to the rolling road haven't played with the carbs at all, they are just straight out of the box. thx.

  2. yes you need f6 emulsions

see how it runs once you've changed those. i fitted an o2 sensor in my exhaust and AFR gauge (bluetooth one on my phone) and spent a bunch of time swapping jets until i got it into the sweet spot.

Dont spend all your money on rolling toads. (Leave that misspelling)

Buy an AFR gauge. Use that.
The rolling road only tunes properly for the drag strip not so much for cruising. If you get an AFR setup with a time graph feature you can see what just happened as you opened the throttle suddenly and decide between accelerator pump or jets or emulsion tubes ..

If the plugs are like that some time later, after petrol would have flashed off, then your piston rings are past their best.

  4. I'd be happy with those straight out of the box - look slightly rich but if the van is running well .... Maybe try the emulsion tubes as suggested by others that run ICTs but going down the afm route is a bit silly for such a basic engine in my 'umble opinion, obviously others opinions will differ but apparently I know nothing

  9. Hmm. Let me clarify. I meant I agree with Chris that AFMs are over the top, not that he knows nothing. Nooooothing.

I am only saying what I said about toads because its comparing spending a fair bit of cash on a single point setup at the RR compared with continuous improvement and monitoring with an AFM is a choice you can make.

Or do both, do initial setup on the RR and then never need to go again.

  11. Thx guys, sounds like the first thing to do is change them emulsion tubes. Are f6 tubes generic to all weber carbs or do I need to get ones specifically for ICTs?
.also are there copies & genuine ones?
    Thx.

  12. You need the ICT specific emulsion tubes. Classic carbs & Eurocarb stock them. Check on fleabay as they both sell them on there & are usually cheaper with free postage

  13. If you’re checking the mixture via the plug colour you need to give the van a good run to fully warm it up duel carriageway/motorway pull into a lay-by and switch off the engine without letting it idle. Only that way will you have a true plug mixture colour.

  14. With ICT 34s how the hell do you remove plugs 3 and 2 with the carbs in????

Depends. IIRC I cut some off the end of my socket so it got past the studs/nuts/manifold and onto the plug if you see what I mean.
Also depends how far your manifold studs stick up and whether you fitted a balance pipe in the way and which make of manifolds.

  16. Just ordered a pair from eurocarb via ebay.. cheaper than off their website & only £1.50 postage.
I think it must depend on what linkage you got re getting the plugs out.
I can get to all of my plugs piece of pi$$ now, much easier than the OEM Solex set up. I got the hex bar linkage & the balance pipe is well out of the way.

Also easier to find Eurocarb parts on eBay than on the Eurocarb website.

Mike over at Way Out Westie wrote this about ICT's. Makes for an interesting read and is a starter for 10 when trying to understand the mysteries that some find when working on ICT's
