Plugs and Leads on a Type4 Engine

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by jedi_stylie, Dec 10, 2011.

  1. Hi all!

I've got a bit of a misfire ATM. After having a poke around I noticed the lead on cylinder 3 wasn't staying attached very well and as none of the plugs or leads have been changed in my ownership I thought I'd better get some new ones in :) So I did

So before I jump in feet first and change em is there anything I should know? Any tips and advise?

I also purchased a new distributor and coil as It was in a nice bundle price. So I have these to hand in case the plugs and leads don't cure the misfire :) No doubt they will need changing some point in the future anyway

    Thanks everyone!

  2. if its the leads then that will probably cure the misfire ....wont hurt to renew other bits as well ...at least you now they will last another year ....whole new dizzy or just dizzy cap and coil ?

  3. Whole new dizzy. Will obviously need setting up etc.

Make sure you bought Bosch. I like their leads. You pay extra but it's so worth it. Everything is so soft including the tinware caps.

2 and 3 are sort of similar in length. Just make sure the one with the longer plastic rod is fitted to 2.

I'm with Birdy on Bosch leads - well worth the extra dosh. Some of the cheap ones don't work from new and you shouldn't have to troubleshoot new stuff really.

  6. Thanks for the replies :)

  7. before you put them on ,have the van ticking over and start pulling one by one the leads off ,if the engine makes the same noise when you take a particular lead off then you know that one is culprit....if all make the engine go slower then your fault is somewhere else...

if your going to change them, try one by one... ^-^

But as it's a T4 engine, unless it's a random one where the (original) carbs are set up right, it probably ticks over on 2 anyway so try them all.

True. Mine was idling fine today running on 1 and 2 because 3 and 4 carb wasn't fuelling. T4's are funny engines.

  11. didn`t think you could get new type 4 vac dizzys ? change the plugs as well (gap them )

  12. if the bosch leads are like them bosch garages.....then its credit card time ....i always get american motorsport ht leads in everything ,the only motor i havent used them in is the vw camper yet .......all them vw shops that sell them bog stadard ht leads need there head testing as there all poo and arnt worth spending the money on ...even them funky coloured ones they do .....im not even a fan of bosch leads.....but there miles better than bog standard .

  13. I bought taylor spiro. Very nice. Got them from stateside. They are solid core with silicon outer so they should last for ever without breaking down. They have very good grommets for sealing to the tinware. I always thought Bosch were good yet the set I took off had gone hard and brittle in 3 short years.
    :)

  14. Thanks for all the tips :)
