Painting tips

  1. It all turned out ok in the end. I got a little orange peel here and there and a few small runs which are easily sorted. And one paint reaction, obviously didn't clean up properly so have to blast over that patch.

All in all as it was my first ever paint job I'm really proud of the finish.

I hear the paint is going to water based? What's that all about then?

  2. if you've got a reaction, it'll either be because you put the paint on a bit heavy (i.e too much thinners sitting about too long, softening up the paint underneath) or something like silicone on the panel, meaning you'll have a "fish eye".

As for orange peel, the best painters in the world cant paint cars without orange peel, better to have orange peel and flat and polish it out, thatn to try and get a perfect finish, and risk having runs.......dry paint polishes up far easier than runs will flat out :)

As for your question on water based......its because companies and governments want to reduce the VOC's they produce, obv solvent based paints produce VOC's as they dry, but water based paints just produce water as it dires, lol. However, water based paints are only base coats, as far as i know you still use solvent based 2k laquer.

We use 2k paints all the time, and dont use water based stuff, as we do restoration, so we dont have to comply with the water based regs.......

  3. Too thick will be the answer then, It was on the door and I cheated by laying the door down flat and painting it that way, get a much smoother finish as you can lay it thicker but obviously run the risk of a reaction

  4. quite possibly then :)

  5. The first coat of paint you put over (cleancleanclean) bare metal is the most important coat IMHO if you want the job to last, then you should use an epoxy primer, unlike other primers epoxy primer is waterproof. Primers like, etch, cellulose, 2k high build etc... are not waterproof and will not give any corrosion protection. When using epoxy primer its best to spray it wet on wet, spray 2 to 3 coats of epoxy, let it flash and then spray your 2k primer.

  6. Looking at the link, I get the feeling that it isn't a high gloss system... o_O

  7. Its for tractors and farm machinery so i doubt it really.

I'm just wondering what else (apart from celly) i can paint my bug with that won't kill me. I've got no air fed mask so can't really use 2k and will b using an Apollo spraymaster to do the painting (so no compressor to run one either).
I've heard you can get 2k masks from 3M but no idea how good they really are.

  8. What about enamel zeb dude

The tractor enamel i use can be brushed, rolled or sprayed and gives an ultra high gloss finish
So glossy in fact that when you use g3 compound on it it dulls the finish

  9. I've used 3M organic filter masks before!! They work really well!!

But you do need eye protection too... Getting paint fumes/atomized paint in your eyes really isn't good for you either!!

I'll link up my mask later as it can be used as air fed or organic filtered

  10. Cheers.

Just to add, I'm positive that 3M dont do a mask suitable for 2k paints, its the isocyanates in the hardener which apparently* does you in, and its these that you cant taste/smell. I'm not one for being too hot with health and safety as just use a 3M organic myself, but thought it be best to put this up.

The only non air fed mask I know of which is suitable is the Gerson ones that come with the correct 2k filters.

Aside from that air fed is the best proper option, but you'll be looking at £180 ish, which some people may argue is cheap to protect your health, or is expensive if just doing the 1 job!

Holding your breath is also another option :D

I know plenty of people who paint 2K with cartridge filter masks, but know plenty that wouldn't dream of it. I agree with you, for the money it's not worth the risk. Buy from ebay for £130, look after it and sell it on when you're done. I'll be selling mine eventually but I have one last job first so it'll be months.

    I have one of these...

...and as you say, a large coalescing filter and a large water trap. There's also a filter on the belt. I also bought a new compressor to avoid some of the crap. Great for your health, rubbish for seeing what you're doing clearly which is why some people risk the cannister masks with built in goggles.

  15. Looks like i'll have to stick to celly then, or save up for a few years and pay someone else to paint it.

  16. This is why you need a really good compressor when it comes to paint spraying!! :)

  18. ^^ Good work Ady, some tips instead of an advert would better suit this thread.

But by all means inquire if you'd like to become a sponsor, starts at only £20 per year :)
