Hi all, I know that Devon offered as an optional extra a side step to enter through the sliding door. My bus is all original and I would like to get an original side step from the 1970s for mine. I have always seen aftermarket steps but never a Devon fitted original one. Does anyone have an original Devon step fitted? If so, can I see a picture of one fitted as I have never seen one in all my 20 odd years of Moonraker ownership and want to know if I can source one from somewhere. Cheers
The only one I can recall seeing (different to the full length ones) is a rather short, odd-looking thing screwed under the sliding door aperture. May explain the badly-installed, wonky screws in my chassis rail. I'd go for the full-length one.
This was my Devon with sidestep. I never really took to this van but not sure why not. I think I’d like it more now.
That's the one ... Bit odd but suppose it impressed the target market of stoned hippies Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
My first bus had one just like that though I don't think it had ever been a Devon. The kids used it when they were small. It wasn't very good and always caked in mud! In bare feet it was like a cheese grater.
I’ve got a single step in my stash of spares. Im not sure who the manufacturer was. Can take some pics if your interested ? Stirlingmoz
I mis-remembered. My van had one when I first got it! It had been clouted sideways in a field, so I cut it off with a grinder and chucked it in the bin. Pic from original eBay ad.
#disclaimer: that’s a joke I’ve used before but I don’t recall it getting many “likes” last time around. I’m hoping for bigger and better things in 2020.
Wow, £6.48 for a side step back then, with free fitting And what about a nice melamine crockery set in b1ege? Lovely.
The camping Gaz has only gone up 3x in price, while poptops have gone up a lot more. If you imagine Devon metalwork involves can openers and hammers, the step looks so ropey you could probably make one yourself out of a tin folding chair and a few hours with an angle grinder and a welder.
The step probably was built by a third party. If it featured perforated metal sheet, the large number of punched metal edges being abraded by muddy and gritty feet would have made it start rotting in months, probably why not many are left. A reimagining in stainless steel may be more effective.
