There's part of the problem "On the news ...."

It's a distraction method. Push the blame of how much the current #10 lot are destroying this country's economy and civil liberties. Let's put a story out about migrants and give them the blame.

Most migrants come here to work. To get anything beyond a room they have to sign up for ESOL lessons and lots are already working multiple jobs. I don't get the hate - our ESOL students don't tell staff to eff off or start fights, they are the hardest working and polite bunch at my place.

The 'i have friends who are this and that ' is usually a front to an underlying attitude - think about your unconscious bias? We all have it.

I don't think we need a thread about migrants.....
Besides, my family counts as migrants.

  3. Sadly we live with a government that is woefully unable to recognise how the UK directly contributes to (and in many cases has catlysed) the issues that cause people to emigrate in the first place. The government can't even admit that systemic racism is real, despite such overwhelming statistical, scientific and anecdotal evidence. Instead of changing their actions, spending, war making habits etc they try to shift blame onto others, and distract the vast majority of people, which is now such a deeply entrenched culture in UK politics. This has been happening since the dawn of colonialism, and I really hope with the internet we now have a chance to see it for what it is, and those of us with the privilege of being native to the UK are able to show some empathy.

If anybody wants reccomendations of books, films and articles to get more clarity on this, just drop me a DM and I'd happy to share.

The only people who are ruining this country is those in positions of power who are in denial about reality.

Some friends of mine volunteer for Assist in Sheffield helping out with folk who are trying to seek asylum.

It is quite shocking how people can be treated. The people they help have to go and sign in weekly, they don’t know if they will be allowed to leave or be detained every time. In Covid times they had to go in alone, usually with poor English so didn’t really understand what was happening. This hasn’t been changed since restrictions ended.

One chap from Kenya , who I was told had a v legitimate reason to flee Kenya, was actually on the bus to the airport to go to Rwanda before he got a stay. Apparently the people running the centre had known he wasn’t going to be deported a few hours earlier but hadn’t told him. That is mental cruelty and some sort of rubbish power trip by the staff

    Actually, everybody is wrong.

The real problem is the countries and regimes which make life so dangerous and intolerable that people feel the need to flee.

Just FYI for anyone who hasn't noticed, that graph is per-capita. There is a different story contained within.

Edit: just noticed the small print. That's 2021 !!! so not relevant to today's discussion.

but surely thats what makes a decent country ( empathy), we do need to do something with our borders maybe work together with France isntead of people bashing the french all the time 0r maybe we should just stop reading the daily fascist ( mail ) and taking every word as gospel remember they pushed for Truss to be PM look how they turned out

  12. The OP may have been naive in thinking that this thread wouldn’t result in the usual pile on from the political wing of the forum but to simply infer that his opening comments suggest that he is racist or that he hates migrants is extreme.

For what it’s worth, my concern is that economic migration diverts money, resources and attention away from the asylum seekers sheltering in the camps in Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Libya etc.

  14. My family crossed the sea from all directions to come here.some to escape persecution some to escape starvation, ( proper starvation not just Sainsbury's selling out of sugar ) some of them signed up to fight for Britain and some of them lost their lives doing so ,that was all they had to give.
Immigrants gradually blend in with population,we are a proper mixed bunch here after all said and done.

  15. Owen is a Guardian columnist so anything he has to say is as independent as the contents of the Daily Mail.

If you Google Albania to discover what terror they are escaping, it appears that illegal logging is the biggest threat in the country..... people genuinely escaping war or persecution should be welcomed with open arms .... the rest should apply to reside.

I don't think the Guardian fires up hatred and false news like the Daily Fail does. It's a good book backed up by good research and data.
