Oil temperature dipstick sensor

  1. My bus (2 litre FI) has never run hot as far as I know including driving in 38c on German autobahns and in the Alps. I always do the hand on dipstick test after long runs and it's never too hot to hang onto. However I do worry about it overheating and cooking the engine. Does anyone have an opinion on the oil temperature dipstick sensors sold by JK which flash the oil pressure light above 107c and permanently illuminate it above 112c? Seems a neat solution as I don't really want a temp gauge but just something to warn me if getting hot. Have read that these temps might be a bit low for a bus but I reckon mine never really get that hot as I go easy on the fast pedal and it runs sweet.

  2. May work, may not. Those temps are on the low side for a bus, so your oil light may start driving you nuts.

    On my type 4.. the oil temp sender replaces the oil pressure relief valve screw cap.

    Reminds me of college days, although that one is a bit more advanced than what we were using in the early ‘80s, linked up to a Zilog Z80 in a tin with a simple keypad for hex programming practice...

  19. Really serious hijack! Anyone got any experience of this temp sensor on a well running type 4? Wouldn't mind the light flashing on a long climb, ie, occasionally but don't like the idea of it flashing away every time I go over 60mph.

    Sorry!

    I don’t have the berg kit but I have the standard VDO dipstick sender on a 1.8 Westy continental and it runs at 100-120c after half hour or so of reasonably ‘hard’ driving, especially in warm weather and on motorways at 60 or more, dropping and picking up with speed, so as others have suggested I think you’d be looking at a red light quite a bit.

    P.s I had the sender tested against a calibrated one as well as using a digital meat probe and it’s accurate with my small gauge.
    I do tend to be a little heavy footed!
