Whilst I'm still waiting for my 150 Needle Valve to go into ICT34 carb set up I am cracking on with the strip down. Yesterday I removed all stock components for this before and after: The left side manifold has been removed and replaced with new manifold. I'm about to start the right side. I've been advised that maintaining a balance pipe between carbs is best and until this morning was under the impression that this was the balance pipe (@3901mick copyright as I'm too lazy to unpack mine now): But after reading a few posts it looks like this may be the balance pipe: Which is it? And do I maintain one or other or run a fresh new hose from 1/2" between with a T to the servo?
The first is part of the solex idle circuit - you don't need that or want it. Second is both balance pipe and vacuum pipe for brake servo. You do want that or equivalent.
So, if theres room, spin the white barbed union around to connect to the pipe: This part here I assume goes to servo through the tinware: So no more work to do there and then connect the right side carb up the same? Or run all new hose between and T off to the servo? I have this T if needed:
Yes. The original is rather neat and tidy if you can make it work. Plastic fittings in a hot manifold? Not for me! Also juggling between tightness and direction might not work out. It's possible to be quite neat if you fit the take off fittings with the balance pipe in mind. Not so easy if you only think about it afterwards - it's all in the planning.
Nothing is bolted down so I can easily back track. The plastic connectors came in the kit and I was dubious to say the least. I'll see if I can find some brass connectors instead.
I've run Weber 34icts on 2 of my buses and you don't need a balance pipe for the smaller Weber's, some will be along to disagree with me but I've had mine set up on a rolling road and with made absolutely no difference to set up or performance, larger Weber's however do benefit from having a balance pipe
If you have the pipework in place connect to that, save you a bit of bother unless you want to hide it or bling it up.. check the rest of the servo pipework if you have it too though leaks in it effect your engine running and your braking effort. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Just when I thought I'd found the correct barbed fittings to come out the manifolds they were wrong. Anyone know what thread, size and brass barb fitting I need for an EMPI manifold?
Wrong way round baz. Single barrel dual carbs tickover much more smoothly with a balance pipe. Dual barrel carbs don't need one.
Jeff at flightpath racing showed me, first he ran with the balance pipe connected then he ran it with the balance pipe blocked off, it made no difference whatsoever, I don't have a servo so I've just blocked mine off, bus runs good
just changed our empis to CBs they were 1/4 npt if helps, didnt think empi had threads I drilled ours years ago.
The newer ones are pre-drilled. I also think the newer ones are even worse casting than the EMPIs from a few years ago as @1973daisey and I found out this arvo.
If those blue fitting are the same as mine they are glass fibre reinforced and not bad. I used them but have taken them out now
