I’ll take it back to the engine builder, but comments on cause would be appreciated. As you can see from pictures, there are spray globules on vertical oil breather and drips on HT leads even reached engine door!

Dripping from behind fan shrouding and engine front.

How did you run the rings in?
Why have you got a filter on your breather?

Only done 60 miles. Never been over 50mph. Didn’t use it at all since rebuilt in November, so no driving in winter.

Not much chance to use this year too, so just a few 10 mike trips to the shops during lockdown

Filter’s been on the breather since I bought it

  5. Seal behind fan ? or O ring behind fan hub ?

Yeh, I was thinking crank seal behind fan.

So we’re talking items 4 or 5 from the picture attached?

    10 miles plodding won't warm up a type 4.
To run the rings in you must do the unthinkable, floor it in 3rd from say 35 to 50, let right off until back to 35 and repeat 4 or 5 times. The rings is ALL you are running in. If you don't it will pressurise the case with blow by.

Take the filter off, let it tick over, feel the draught at the end of the breather pipe, there should not be any chuffing. If there is at tickover your rings didn't bed in.

If it is the fan oil seal ...a VW bay mechanic will have it changed in an hour if he has a hugh work load ...if he's not busy two and a half hours .

So can I still bed the rings in by the procedure you described above? Haven’t wrecked anything?

Do the breather chuffing test first, if it's not chuffing you might just have a leak in which case you wouldn't want to be thrashing around squirting more oil about. :)

I think I’ve seen this without removing engine. Removing tin and fan etc?

Cuffing with revs is normal, it's caused by windage.

  15. Surely the engine builder gave you a run in procedure?!

Ok, I’ll put the whiskey away for now. I’ll try the breather out tomorrow

When you’ve done it and solved any leaks, getting rid of that crappy filter and plumbing it in where it should be will help stop the inside of your engine bay getting sprayed with oil again.
It’ll also give your crankcase the negative pressure it desires...

That's right ..the fan flange is a bit of an anus to get off ...they can be tight but mine was ok ...you can use a puller .

I didn't have one ..seem to remember pulling it of with bolts by putting steel plate strips between flange and block ...then went easy, even and steady ...but abort the idea if it gets ridiculous

Is it losing oil fast - does the dipstick level go down - because beside/behind the fan pulley on that engine are some gallery plugs which sometimes pop out on cold starts. If they leak then that would be throwing oil around the back of the engine.

Not to mention that filter arrangement is adding oil mist to the cab heater air supply. Not healthy.
