I’d seriously consider buying another crankcase. Unfortunately you might end up with two needing to be machined but type 4 cases are tough and don’t often need to be bored – one of the reasons why oversize bearings can be difficult to find.

  2. The Engine shop also do align boring. The only worry would be how worn their tooling is.
They would be a second choice after Stateside.
Don’t know of anyone else who still has type 4 tooling.

Have they got in house facilities now, I know when I built Gusbus motor they used The Engine Shop for crank grinding and line boring.

It's been a bit of a journey and I've now spoken to over 10 machine shops and most can't or don't want to work on 2ltr type 4s. Unfortunately, the engine company's equipment has been damaged recently and they can't help for a few months. I'm off to see a company after lockdown and then I'll decide between them and Stateside.

Thanks for the suggestion but I didn't call Coolairvw as if you look further in their FAQs they state they don't do type 4.

Thanks all for the help, it is appreciated.

For the price of an align bore you’d get another crankcase, or maybe two. You know that 1700, 1800 and 2.0l crankcases are the same, don’t you?

    ....I know nothing!

I'd like to keep the original (afaik) case if possible (GE130000) I just like to number:)

I'm pricing up my options. @77 Westy, I haven't looked at other cases but when you say another do you mean reconditioned or new?

Edit I've just looked and seen Stateside have both.... interesting:thinking:

GE cases were used from 08/76 to 07/79. No, I don’t mean reconditioned but a used crankcase, maybe from someone that has changed to a Scooby engine or from someone that has engine parts for sale.

Update. I now have all of the studs out except for one last one that does not want to budge. Heated stud, lots of plusmax etc. Applied to no avail. I'll leave it soaking for a few more days.

All of the valves are out and look OK. I'll take some photos before and after later this week.

The con rods are all off so that I can exchange or just get small end bushes. The crankshaft and Conrod journals etc all look good and the crankshaft measured perfectly, in-fact all 4 slightly large at 50.00mm when book suggests 49.98 max.

  14. Hi Chris, I wondered what you are using to measure things as .02mm in 50mm is .04% which is pretty demanding, even temperature of everything may influence the outcome at this level of accuracy.
This is purely of academic interest as I'm sure the figures you have look pretty good

He’s using my micrometer! Indeed, there’s a risk of spurious levels of accuracy, but overall the crank is looking pretty good...

  16. Any micrometer will measure down to 0.01mm (which is actually quite large, bearing-wise - about 4 tenths in old money).

  17. @Chrisd Hi Chris i have a type 4 case that i purchased to rebuild a 1800cc engine that I've since sold i paid £100 for it and was told that it was all good and ready to go I'm happy to sell for what it cost me and you can pay after you have checked it out and confirmed the bearing seats are ok. Where are you based I'm in the midlands cheers Ian.

    Cheers Ian.
I'm having the case checked by an engineering company on Friday, so once I know what they say, then do you mind if I get back to you next week? I'm just SW of the M25 Woking area. But I'm happy to travel C19 allowing!
    Thanks

  19. @Chrisd yes I have to sell it eventually but no rush from me so if and when you want it let me know cheers.

Hi all. For those who know these sort of things, if I take up Ian's 1700 CA engine case, will this be a straight replacement for my 2ltr GE case (originally FI) or will other differences cost as much as the work I need on mine? Ian is happy for me to ask this here.:)
