Oil filler breather size

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the 3 crispies, Nov 25, 2020.

  1. Is thread on oil filler tower barb 1/4 0r 1/8 npt for hose for breather and looking for a 90 deg angled one.
Can a 10mm ID hose be used from this to adjacent Ict air filter or will this cause an internal negative pressure.

  2. What oil filler have you got? If it's a shiny aftermarket one, the breather connection is probably too small.

No, its actually meant to be 20mm ID ! Or 13mm if you have the old dribbly downpipe too.

Drill for something bigger or bin the shiny pretty junk.

The shorter tin stock oil filler also has a bigger hole for oil filling so theres more room for the oil jug.

And when you lose or mangle the filller cap(just drop it down by the crank pulley) ,just go to a VW car show where theres a line of Golfs with compatible caps.

As above, the stock is 20mm ID.

Something bigger like 1/2" is probably OK. Otherwise it will tend to breathe mist from round the crank pulley,as your engine ages, and dribble more oil fron the flywheel end.

  6. ^this. The breather connection on the blingy filler towers are notorious small compared to the originals. You may find the crankcase pressurising itself.
