And just to round it off, Heritage VW in Salisbury have just called to say the clip fitting and the gasket (amounting to the grand sum of £3) on back order from Germany are ready for me to collect! Oh happy days.

Resurrecting this old thread (think I commented on this way back, but looking at my cleaner it seems different to those mentioned).

My cleaner is one of the earlier style ones (I've been unable to find a picture of someone running this setup with everything connected).

The cool air flap is controlled by a spring looking thermostat on the side (I've taken the whole unit apart and the thermostat works correctly when sat in warm water).
It doesn't have a spigot for the fuel tank breather pipe, so I have three questions:
    1. Did the breathers for this type originally just vent to atmosphere?
    2. Presumably I shouldn't vent to atmosphere, and should plumb it into the cleaner?
    3. Does someone have a link to a suitable fitting?

    Cheers!

  12. I recall the earlier ones just vent crankcase fumes to the atmosphere through a tube down through the tinware. The tube has a little squeezed nozzle on the end.

Should be fine. Don’t forget to park outside the local branch of Greenpeace with the engine running

Yeap I have that. Did the fuel tank breathers do the same as well then?!

  14. Not sure what they did with the tank breathers. Someone will know. Have you got a hole in the tinware where the pipe could go through?

I think the tank breathers have always been connected somewhere between the filter / air cleaner and the carburettor so there is a bit of negative pressure.
If you have a crank case breather going to an oil bath cleaner there is a weighted flap in the air intake to slow down the engine fumes going out the air intake when its stopped and also to provide negative pressure when the engine is running. And in that design the breather is before the filter so the oily spray keeps the oil bath topped up, and its after the filter in a paper filter one I believe.

Thank you! I’ll find a suitable spigot and get it fitted.

Hi Sarah @scrooge95 just found this thread as i'm searching/collecting all the bits to reinstate the OG air filter, did the new thermo valve work ?
    thanks Mike

Hi Mike, I’ll be brutally honest here.... I don’t know. There seems to be a bit of a dark art with these things and whilst I think all the components of mine are okay, I’ve not managed to get anyone to look at it and actually confirm that it is doing what it should. The new thermo valve certainly should work (the old one was definitely kaput) but whether as a whole the oil bath and all its flaps are doing what they need to, I’m not sure.
Sorry, that’s probably not much help!

Next techenders I’m going to search out another oil bath air cleaner owner and get a guided tour of theirs, followed by a ‘compared and contrast’ session (a ‘you show me yours and I’ll show you mine’ kind of thing!)
Someone please remind me of this, come April :)
