Nuts

Discussion in 'How To' started by tburton100, Dec 17, 2022.

  1. I’ve got a nut that’s just spinning on the thread, won’t tighten or loosen, any suggestions how to get it off?

It’s on one of the wipers.

    Cheers

Turn and prise/turn and pull with grips?

  3. saw off carefully - or remove material on 2 sides with a file
Don't saw the last millimeter into the thread, bend it open with a screwdriver or pliers.
Hopefully only the screw nut is damaged.

    New stainless nuts... pennies..
Wiper spindles £32.50. But they are available from e.g. JK.

    Hope its the nut.

Wiper arms slip if you dont do that nut up to spec. Then the splines on the spindles fill up with metal filings, so they still slip when tightened up properly. At that point if you take the arm off, clean the splines and do the nut up properly it might work properly.
If you just keep tightening, something strips.

If not, the wiper arms are not too expensive .

If its the thread and there is still about 4 turns on the thread left, you could use washers between the nut and the wiper arm to keep a new nut on the thread.

Trouble is they are in a recess in the top of the wiper arm? Not saw friendly.

Where there's a will there's a way. I just get a bit sad that people post unworkable general replies for a specific question. I mean yeah, obviously you can hacksaw nuts. I'd question dremmel too as the wiper arm is soft and the nut is both hard and spinning. It would take some skill not to damage the arm in the process, IIRC you can barely get a socket on it. :)

  10. I have felt your frustration in other posts .
I’m a Toolmaker by trade with the last 22 years as a R&D engineer and I get exasperated daily. :) ( dremmel with carbide burr and mole grips)

  11. It’s off, I had to cut down an old metal saw blade to about 0.5cm then cut the nut until I could open it up and snap it off.

Spindle tread is worn so I’ll just go for a new one and not have this problem again.

    I appreciate the advice.
