Hi all, I'm new to this forum, so a quick intro and some pics below. I was lucky enough to recently buy a 1978 Kombi (1979 registered), converted to a camper by Devon Conversions early in it's life. This was a long term ambition for me and my wife and the intent is to use it for trips away and eventually some longer touring. We are based in Kent. It's had an early pop-top roof installed and is generally in quite nice condition, obviously some dents, filler and repainted in places but presentable, visible rust is minimal. It needs new camping electrics as they are not working or poorly installed, gas system, a new pop-top canvas, headliner, seat trim, some sort of heating and a general sorting out, so not bad overall. Miles say 58k, but I've no idea how many times it's been round the clock. There is no m-plate in the usual place, just holes where it was once. But I know it was built on 27/6/1978 and delivered to the UK. It had limited options when new and is still the original colour, I suspect it was purchased for conversion to a camper. There is no history with it, I got some details from VW. The engine on the other hand looked fine, but was frankly knackered. I believe it may even be only a 1300 based on the engine number and it's low power, it ran very very hot, won't idle even after quite a bit of attention and stank of petrol . So after some review at a local specialist, that's gone in for a replacement with a refurb 1641. Overall we are delighted and had a great first (short) trip in it before it went into the garage for the engine. Looking through the forum here, I have a great deal to learn, so I will appreciate any good advice. My favourite pic so far below.
Welcome to the forum fella, enjoy your stay! I think Mike and myself commented on your post over on thesamba (from memory that is)
Hi there, I'm keen on keeping it close to authentic. It's Sussex Aircooled. Also having a clutch whilst the engine is out now as that also is knackered..
