Looking for ideas folks , so I thought I’d ask the Latey Massive. I’m burning up my left over holidays at the moment as I don’t think I’m up to speed doing my job any more. I’m down to three or four days a week but I’m suffering a fair bit with Plantar Phasiiitus or however it’s spelt. Also got some left over COPD from donkeys years of building and smoking. At the moment I’m a delivery driver for Asda delivering groceries and the like and it’s a great job that I really enjoy. It’s the weight and the lifting that seems to be creating issues with my feet, it’s loading the van then off loading to customers, going up steps and stairs and driveways etc etc. It’s generally about five hundred kilos twice a day (two runs) it can be up to seven hundred kilos twice a day and then there’s the distance it may need to be carried. The folks at Asda have been really helpful in getting someone to help me deliver to the customers but it’s generally someone that’s not familiar with what to do so I still end up getting it all off the van while someone younger carries it to the customers for me. I can’t seem to stand by and let them get on with it mainly because they don’t know what to do and tend to take one basket and then stand chatting to the customer as they have no urgency about them, but we need to stay on time. Occasionally I’ll get a new driver to train and they usually are a little more interested in getting it done right and being on time and up to speed, but I still get out and checked that they haven’t missed anything and they usually do. So I’m looking for something similar to do but with little lifting. Ive thought about maybe delivering prescriptions or similar. Any good ideas folks?:) I’m not after a new career as such, and I’m not looking for fifty plus K per year , just something for beer / pin money two or three or four days a week. I live in Kingswood in Bristol and im not interested in driving for a half an hour or so each way, just something local like Asda is now, it’s five minutes away on a good day and maybe six to ten minutes on a bad day, I’m not after much am I

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,officially,,I’m also now a pensioner :cool::cool::cool:

  5. Sorry to hear this fella, you always seem so chipper about a job you enjoy that most people wouldn't touch. Have you thought about staying with Asda but doing the order picking in-store /click and collect stuff instead?

Car parts delivery could be an option, or could car delivery for garages etc. Put a shirt/tie (with trousers as well) on and be a chauffer

"Plantar Fasciitis" is treatable so, if you'd rather keep the job you're in I'd say splash the cash on a couple of sessions with either an Osteo, Physio or OT ... Shop around a bit and be prepared to pester with questions before booking, to get a sense of whether they sound right-for-you and knowledgeable?
You could also do a bit of DIY work on it.
PM me if that's something you're up for and I can look into the history of it a bit more before dispensing wisdom :)

Can't help you with much other than this - Plantar Phasiiitus

Get a cheap wooden rolling pin (a fairly thick one) and stand with one foot on the floor - the other on the rolling pin. Roll your foot over the pin from big toe base to just before your heel - go easy on the heel end.

Over a number of weeks, increase the amount of weight you apply to the foot on the rolling pin, and the number of times you do it a day.

Hockey balls, golf balls, cans of beans etc. etc. do not work. A rolling pin does.

+1 for rolling pin as the best of the bunch, and of course it's the affected foot you roll ... assuming it's just the one?
If it's both then stand on a small cushion with the non-rolling one.

Also, you're rolling, as above, then lifting back to the start point ... not rolling back and forth.

    AND ... roll sloooowly

AND don't do any of the above until we've had a quick chat on PM to dispense my wisdom :)

As an example watch this link, which is just the first of many that come up,
    BUT bear in mind that

    1) he's wrong to say there isn't an inflammatory element

    2) he rolls back and forth, not in the one direction

    3) he doesn't mention that a slower/longer stretch ... with a slow release, is best.
He's doing them a bit quick as it's a demo.

    4) there's no mention of what you can do away from the foot, in your calf and even higher up .....

MR Asda would dearly love me to go on the checkout but that’s not really my thing. I like the freedom of delivering and seeing all the customers and getting to know them and pass on all the jokes that I sometimes glean from the TLB comedic centre. There are other roles like order picking and click and collect but that is still on your feet continuously on very hard surfaces for your whole shift. In the van, you at least get to sit down while driving in between drops but the heavy crates soon more than make up for it, whereas picking etc, there’s not too much in the way of lifting but you’re on your feet the whole time and there ain’t much fitted carpet in there.
I’ve just been to the store to have a chat with our management types and there’s not much leeway here. The only suggestion I’ve come up with is to be a seasonal worker for them and to come in to work with and help train their new drivers which is something else I do there already, but and the big but is it’ll be so irregular, possibly one day one week and two or three days a month later,,, possibly.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, maybe that’s my retirement introduction.
