    Cool engine code...South African?
Edit, most Bus type 4s don't have that bung so that's probably a replacement as far as I know:thumbsup:, well ours doesn't and it would be super handy:)

  2. I would think that rotor arm is pointing at number 3 !
Number 1 is front right and should be stamped into the tinwear

  3. Yeah South African

  4. As above 10 o'clock likely to be 3 so one full rev of crank on.. you can always s check if rockers are loose on no 1 and inlet of no2.

Once you find that no1 and fit the new distributor in , the new location of the rotor arm will be no1 as they can change between makes

Thats interesting, Gusbus has one on his fanhousing but its not original to the motor itself yet Major's old type 4 was cast without the hole!

  6. We only have it on one of them too...Think its a 914 thing... so maybe only a few have this as a timing option.

Maybe so buddy, to be fair, ours has never been undone (least since the motor was built)!

  8. After viewing many videos, I think this task may be beyond me. Does anybody know anyone know a decent aircooled specialist in the Cambridge area who could fit this?

I’m not a million miles from Cambridge, if you can’t find anyone nearer @badgerbay

I can even show you how to do it, so you can do it yourself next time.

Can you static time the electronic dizzy?

  12. Depends. If the ignition unit turns the coil power off when the engine’s stopped, no. If it doesn’t (like a Pertronix 1), yes you can, just like points.

  13. Thanks for the offer. This would be pretty awesome. Let me know when would be convenient

I take no.1 spark plug out,put a piece of thin wood in the hole( I used a cut down chopstick,or a pencil), move the flywheel around with a big spanner, and keep hold of the wood until it comes out as far as it can, then turn the flywheel back and forwards so that the wood isn’t moving.look at your rotor arm in the dizzy. The brass bit on it should be at around 1 o’clock,in line with the mark on the dizzy. That true tdc.
Your notch on the flywheel should be inline with the join in the 2 engine cases.
If it’s not,you may have a different flywheel on there. If that’s so,put a new notch in it,with a file and mark it with white paint. Chances are,it will line up.

    Really bad advice matey!
It's a type-4 engine, due to the spark plug angle the wood will snap and they are not timed to the crankcase split, they have a scale - tdc is about 11 o,clock and it's F all to do with the flywheel. Have you been on the cooking sherry?

Type 4. Ok. Never read that.Never had a problem with the type 2 twin port though.

  18. Despite Dubs’s very kind offer to show me how to do this I just haven’t had the opportunity to take the van up there so have had a go at it myself. Unfortunately it won’t start with the new dizzy in.

    Here’s what I did:
Took old 009 dizzy cap off and cranked engine round so rotor arm pointed to number 1 cylinder. This also coincided with the TDC mark at 0 on the pulley.

Then removed old dizzy, put new SVDA one in making sure the leads were in the same order clockwise 1-4-3-2. Then I wired up +ve and -ve to the coil and added a vacuum pipe from the RHS carb and blocked it off the other end to start initial timing without the vacuum. I moved rotor arm round to point to where the number 1 lead was. Then started it. It turned over but didn’t fire up. Any ideas where to check first?

  19. From memory, a 009 has the plug leads 90* different to a stock dissy. Try moving them round so #1 is closest to the fuel pump.

Edit: oops, type 4. Someone will know.

Is it sat flush with the case?
If you have a 2mm gap, take it out and turn it 180 degrees.
