Ahh so the light bulb method is the true way to do static timing, cheers for that one :D

  4. Right....rain stopped play again, but this is my plan, so please tell me if I'm going in the wrong direction.

I'm going to turn the engine by hand until I see the no1 intake valve going closed (taking rocket covers off). When this is shut and exhaust is shut too, that should be no1 tdc stroke yes? So now the valves are both shut and the timing mark on the fan will be near zero. The rotor arm should also be pointing to no1 lead too yes? Granted everything might not be lined up perfect, but that puts me in the right place. I'd then turn the engine back till fan mark lines up at 7.5 BTDC, and then turn dizzy till no1 lead lines up with rotor arm yes?
Does that sound like I've got it right @zed and anyone else :)
I'm assuming this method, watching the valves, will quickly tell me if I'm totally out or not?

You cannot accurately set the timing by the visual position of the rotor arm!
Do you have a timing gun?
Attach it after doing what you said above which will have affirmed you have the HT leads in the right order.
Get assistant to turn it over on the key while you set the timing with the strobe. When it's about right the engine should start and you can set it more easily.

  6. Yeah I've got a gun. Regarding the rotor arm, I didn't mean it to sound like I was using that to set anything. I meant if I did that process, and the arm just happened to point towards no1, wouldn't that rule out me having the dizzy 180 deg out?

I also didn't realise you could use the gun just on turn over, thought it had to be running! Thanks for that

I'll get the gf to turn her over whilst I use the gun and turn the dizzy.....much easier :)

  8. It's gone far too quiet for my liking. Is it the lull before the storm? Or has he topped himself?

  9. Haha just got in from a school play. No rain, so I'm cracking on :)

  10. Right @zed, I've just gone through the full firing sequence (2 full crank turns) and I checked each cylinder to see intake and exhaust valve positions. The result is that at no1 tdc, my timing mark on the fan is 180 deg from where it should be. Here's a couple of pics showing the fan and dizzy when piston no1 is at tdc just after intake valve has closed

Does this mean I got the dizzy 180 out?

  11. I'm confused as to how the fan can be there at tdc

Yes, but if you wanted, you could turn the dog on the bottom of the distributor 180 degs.
    ?

  13. Forget that last bit.....I'm an idiot (one that's learning loads mind you :D ) I forgot that after the vale closes the crank actually turns another half turn before piston is at tdc.....took the plug out and realised! Doh

So....answer is I'm 180 out on the dizzy, hence why it won't fire right?
Should I just remove it and turn dog round since I've got an svda? I think the vac thing might foul the engine if I rotate it to make 1 where 3 currently is

It really doesn't matter where the leads are on the distributor, or how the body is generally orientated so long as when No. 1 is at TDC firing stroke, wherever the rotor arm points put no.1 lead on the cap in that place and follow round in firing order.

  15. Aaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!!!!! Well....I can now start the engine, but had a weird whiring noise. After a quick investigation, the bloody fan belt is rubbing on the fan housing part of the alternator!!! Not a major job to sort, but means it's another night of not running. But for the 30 secs I ran it.....she sounded sweet

  16. Yaaaaaaaayyyyyy finally running. Now, how do you upload a bloody video? :)

  18. That vid is first start up so you can hear the tappets nice and loud!

This one is after about 15 mins or so, quieting down nicely

Only worry I have is that my timing gun appears to not like my ht leads and was giving me a false reading for revs, so I think I ran too fast for the 20 min run in period. Should be 2000 revs but it was possibly more like 3000. Is this gonna give me a problem? Exhaust appeared to get very hot and the engine, but these run hot anyway. Unfortunately I haven't wired up the cht yet, but will this weekend

  19. Was it timing?

  20. Yep.....managed to get the drive 180 out. No idea how as I checked....double checked etc. but hey ho, got there eventually :)
