Wow! Carl I don't know how I've been missing this thread for months but I've just sat and read from the beginning. Your work looks impressive enough from an experienced welder/fabricator but it is amazing to think you learnt all this in such a short time. The neighbours might be moaning now but they are going to be so jealous as you cruise out of the drive in your bus.

They're right, you have an attention to detail and accuracy that you don't expect to need when you start on this malarky! Top work. I don't post on your thread much but I enjoy watching it come together.

  7. thanks Zed, obviously there's an element of doubt on my part, like.. "ooh is this right" or "have I buggered this up".. so its nice to get the thumbs up from people who know their stuff hahaha.

    thanks!

Cobblers, I do the same, I just started a few years before you did and not so many years either! I was a telecoms design engineer not so very long ago. I just got addicted to melting steel bits together....

  9. another little bit chipped away. I span the bus around yesterday to have a look at the other side. mostly just needed a good clean up, and a few small repairs..

and lastly, managed to fix the rear bumper over riders on,

  10. This is my favourite resto thread this year

Dude i love your story, your approach and the pace in which you tick that list off
If we werent miles apart id be happy to work alongside you

Im not qualified in anything vehicle related myself i just decided to give it ago one day and ive grown since
You dude will be knocking restos out like sheilsy does once youve finished your bus

Carl do you still want them heads fettling or did the ebay stuff not go to plan?

  11. Cheers para!
Yeah i sent you a pm about a month ago, did you not get it?

  12. I got a new rear off side wheel arch today from VW Heritage. its a klokkenholm one but its silver.. and I remember someone, somewhere saying something about them being galvanised now?

I take it this means I just have to skim a flap disc over the edge i'm about to weld?

  13. Errm i dont think so

Ive got to pop out and pick the little un from nursery so ill wade through my pms when i get back and double check

  14. Yeah remove the galvanised coating from both sides about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch from where you'll be welding and don't breath in any of the horrible white fumes as it makes you poorly!

  15. Ensure you wear a mask when dressing it as well, otherwise you may end up with a crappy cough o_O
Also the fumes when welding are highly toxic, best to do in a well ventilated area. Best still with extraction.
Check your welding mask lense after a few mins welding, the white sh!te on your lense is a good indicator
that you may need more ventilation

  16. not much of an update, but I started cutting a few bits off today.
started with the rear wheel arch, the one that was on there had been spot welded onto the side of the bus, then filled over. Also it didnt have the square style lip on the arch, dont know why.

    started with.
    round lip?

    new arch lip
    [IMG]

there was over 15mm of filler in places!!

they even went over the edge of the original arch!

cut all the other crap out.

good job i have already bought a new sill.

  17. The amount of filler slapped on these old busses never ceases to amaze me

  18. looking good carl. nice to see your good work and progress. got the bumper over rides dimensions thought the post cheers for that dude. big thumbs up

  19. todays little update..

before I had a clue what i was doing I got a mobile welder in for a day, and this was his attempt at fixing my rear seat belt mount..

And I didn't like it, so decided to start a fresh. Cut it out..

    made this...

    put it in...

still needs two sides cleaning up but I need some more flap discs.

then I got my new tank straps welded in,
    [IMG]

then I got the rear cargo load area cut out and started to weld it in,
    [IMG]

lastly, the same mobile welded who *****ed my seat belt mount up, did the same to my floor, welded on top of the rust..

so I got this cut off dubscum,
    [IMG]

separated the 2 bits I need, here's one cleaned up and zinc primed,
