My engines developed an odd noise...

  1. I haven't been in the engine bay or underneath to investigate anything yet.

What its doing is when its started, from what is now very cold, when its warmed and ticking over every few revolutions there is an 'air escaping squeak, squeaky fart kind of sound'

So it sounds like air coming out, so i'm guessing exhaust instead of inlet. But it doesn't sound like an 'exhaust blowing' kind of sound - its like a phhsst kind of sound.

Its on the right hand bank only. Could it be a plug, inlet manifold, exhaust, cylinder head, barrel??

I'll see if I can record it but in advance anyone any ideas?

Mine used to do this. Check the nuts that hold the inlet manifold on. Mine used to sound like it was powered by budgies :)

With the tidy up I've now fitted spring washers to the nuts.

  5. just been out as it is (a bit) warmer.

Its inlet/carb related. I will investigate further this week-end

  7. Did you put the head shims in from the gasket set when you rebuilt your engine?

if you did, they are most likely the issue.... even though they are in the gasket set, vw released a workshop update to dealers stating that type 4 engines for rebuild shouldn't be fitted with them... due to the gaskets crushing down and causing blow by on the heads/cylinder...

  8. Yes I did

  10. Thanks Paul, I'll bear that in mind when I pull the engine out next. I've just fitted the k&n filters and checked the carbs. The right hand carb needed tightening as did the manifold. I should have checked them I guess before now. I haven't checked them since I fitted them. Filters sound well throaty

  11. different people say different things, the wo code type 4 i rebuilt had the steal head rings as original fitment and they lasted 90k , spoke to laurie petit and he said fit them if engine originally had them ... go figure
