  1. Take the cap right off and check the little carbon rod in the centre is still there. I had a "new" one disintegrate as I was driving bringing me to a halt and was a swine to find why

  2. If you find that the leads are ok. I would pop the Dissy cap make sure the rotor arm is sitting properly on the Dissy shaft, that it's not chewed up and that the Dissy cap isn't chewed. With the cap off turn engin and check points are opening and closing. Put it back together.

The next thing I would have a look at would be the fuel cut off valve connections. These pick their feed up and will be one of the black wires on the coil and should be connected to the valves on the carbs.

Your engine is type 4 by the way and as you say probably 2 litre. These are a long reach plug. What is the number on the plugs or the boxes they came out of.

Next thing I'm going to suggest is whipping the petrol pipe off at the tee in the engine bay, turning the engine over on the starter and seeing if there's fuel coming out.

Be methodical. One thing at a time and you will get there. You need to answer the questions tbh. I'm hoping it's just leads as it's unlikely there's any damage. No offence meant but is your mechanic friend actually a mechanic?

Darren, are you mechanically minded at all - this is by no means dis respectful to you?

There are plenty of books out there that will give you good basic knowledge on what to do in servicing your motor.

The Bentley manual covers the whole of our bays from body to engine to electronics

Tom Wilson does a good book on how to strip down and rebuild an engine

even the Haynes manuals will teach you a lot!

You will learn lots from the guys on here, shout if you struggle!

  4. Sure I've read about these running on 3 or even 2 cylinders?

    check the leads

  5. Is anyone else willing Darren to go try his leads in the wind and the rain? I'm on the edge of my seat waiting!
Only joking mate, in your own time....methodically does it or something else will get knocked out of place. Good luck and I hope it is the leads.

  6. When it did run after the leads were fitted, did it run well/as good as before or was it down on power? I still think the leads are on wrong..

If it is the leads you need a) new "mechanic" friends and b) a Haynes manual.

  10. He says he has qualifications. I'm not so sure now. The guy looking at it most recently though is a mechanic. I'll try what you say, fingers crossed its the leads!

As you read through, look at the engine in front of you, cross reference! If you don't understand, ask away, plenty will help you!

  13. Very easy to pull the leads off. For the time being just use the diagram provided and follow them with your fingers before pulling them off. If they are wrong and you have to change them, just be methodical as said. One by one.

i don't mean any offence at all and I don't suggest you cast any aspersions as to his ability but it shouldn't be difficult for an experienced mechanic to get to grips as to be honest this engines have their foibles but most of us are just amateurs like yourself who have learned from books, experience and a bit of help.

  15. Same here! Remember that if you take something off, mark it with tape or a pen,so it goes back in the same place.
Do it slowly and methodically.make sure you have a good torch so its nice and bright so you can see well.
Get some books as mentioned before, bacically you cant own an old vw bus without doing simple repairs yourself.
Unless you got a really good mechanic who does know these engines, even though if you venture further out you need to know some stuff.

  16. Wikepedia and the internet, youtube too are good tools.
Start be learning how a combustion engine works, how points create a spark and how carbs create the right air/fuel ratio to burn properly.

  17. I don't see how the leads can be wrong if it ran OK before... It might have run, but it would have been pretty awful.

  18. Read it, Darren, even if it's only looking at the pictures ;). These things are pretty simple and not that hard to understand. You are going to need to acquire some basic skills with a vehicle of this age or you're not going to get much enjoyment out of it.

Do you have a tablet pc with skype Darren? Maybe someone on here who knows about type 4 engines could do a skype with you during daylight hours? Talk ya thru what ya need to be looking at? That's not me btw, am just wondering if that might help. A kind of virtual techenders if you will. Hope you get it sorted mate. :)

  20. I think he changed the dizzy cap.Leads on wrong? Maybe?
The dizzy could also have been loose, caused the timing to shift a little?
