This sounds good....... Darren can you describe how it ran a bit better. Was it a long run or just a short one, did it just stall or did you switch off then have trouble re starting after that, was it fiddled with after driving then before re starting?
Photos! The disconnected wire you see in the front of some photos was disconenct3ed by my mechanic today. Dont know what it is, dont know why!
I started the journey. It stalled at each janction. Drove it for a mile or just ender. Turned off the engine, then when I tried to restart it that was it. Hasnt went since then. Been looked at and fiddled with lots since then. By peoplewho know what theyre doing!
Hopefully you will get it sorted in the morning colin , dont worry about it too much it doesnt sound terminal ,it will be something simples.
Looking at the images, I am wondering where #1 plug lead is. Im certain its not in the 4 oclock position, looking into the engine bay (where convention says it goes)
To me this sounds like a timing issue. I had a similar issue with my beetle and ultimately most of the issue was the timing. I'm sure someone has instructions of getting your timing back to basic settings or at least get your mechanics to reset to base settings. I have to say though and with the greatest respect, do your mechanics know VW buses or are they just guessing because they know about other cars? I don't think this is a big issue just timing which is complicated when you don't know how to do it, easy when you do know how.
Air leak. On each inlet manifold (pipe between carb and cylinder head that the carb is bolted too) on the outside near the bottom is a rubber elbow. See if one has fallen off/split. and check the 10mm steel pipe is still plugged into both. Did the engine sound brrmmmmy and lack throttle response?
I can't work out where the plug leads are going to. Dissy looks in approximately the right orientation but looking at the clip it may not be fitted correctly. That could be a red herring. Ignition to positive on coil so that's ok. Condenser to negative side of coil ok. Will ke looking but could do with seeing where those leads go.
Then remove the whole air filter and arms and check all the big pipes between the carbs and manifolds - less likely than the elbows, but same effect.
Well spotted, but agreed prob red herring, I've started engines with neither clip on and the top rattling around.
Have a look at this diagram, next to where the plugs go is written numbers on the tin, these are your cylinder no.s. Connect the plug leads according to this diagram.
