My 1970 bug

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Zebedee, Sep 9, 2011.

  1. Passengers side all back together and torqued up.
Needs a bit of bouncing or a run around to settle the suspension but it looks like its about 40mm or so higer than before.

Changed the fuel filter for a nice new clean one while access was available.

Old one looks like it'd been filtering coffee.

Made a start on the drivers side.

  3. One spline round should equal about a 50mm raise. Probably a shade less due to sagging torsion bars.

  4. This is the height its now at. Hasn't been moved or driven yet as i stripped a thread on the lower shock mount bolt.

  5. Theres now a decent amount of clearance under the towbar.

  6. Stripped thread, most annoying...

  7. It is when the bolts are £6 each.

  10. Took the bug for a quick run around to settle the suspension. Much less scraping now. I think the tracking could do with checking though as its a little bit wayward.

Managed to get the choke flap stuck in the fully closed position when i refitted the air cleaner last so she wouldn't run properly after she started. Took a few minutes for me to figure that one out.
    View from the drivers seat.

  11. Apparently setting the toe in to 3mm with the wheels off the ground equates to around 4cm once its back on its wheels. I did not know that when i replaced the track rod end at MOT time.
No wonder it was a bit wayward, it was constantly fighting itself to turn one way or the other.
Took it for a run around and its a lot nicer to drive again.

  12. Had the brake pedal sink to the floor while driving. Thought it was possibly the master cylinder that had failed as pumping the pedal didn't firm it up. Checked everywhere and no leaks anywhere i could see.
Pumped the pedal while kneeling next to the car and could hear a squelching sort of sound coming from the drivers side back wheel.
Yep, looks like a popped wheel cylinder.

  16. Decided to do something about the drivers seat backrest as its been a bit saggy. I assumed the main frame had broken or the springs but it was just a few of the bars had come adrift.
    Welded it all back together.

Refitted the cover using a plastic bag over the padding to help it slide on easier.

Fitted it back in the car. Feels a lot firmer now.

  17. Had a bit of a run around this afternoon while the weather was decent. Definately feel it needs a subwoofer fitting as when you turn the bass up the rear speakers distort. Haven't managed to find a cheapish active sub yet though as they're all miles away and won't post due to the weight.

Do you have an amp powering the rear speakers? That might help the distortion

yes, this. depending on your head unit and wire thickness, you could be getting distortion through basic lack of RMS

  20. No amp. They're only cheap 60w 4" speakers which were the only ones i could find to fit these speaker pods i have.

I'm running a Sony headunit in the glovebox which worked great with 6" 80w speakers using the same stock automotive speaker cabling in my westy before we sold it. I think the speakers just don't have a big enough voice coil to cope with any level of bass.
