I cut the bar out behind the grill (the one the speaker bolts to) then used a dremel with a small cutting disc to cut out the grills bars. I bought the oil temp guage and sender as a matched pair from vanfest years ago. I've noticed they are all 300f ones now.
Pleasant suprise this morning when this months Volksworld dropped through the letter box and i found my bug is in it.
Fantastic stuff mate, looks great! I'm just doing my 1200-style headliner too. What did you use for the cardboard edging strip? Struggling to find anything suitable.
I just used some heavy duty cardboard (the kind of stuff you get on envelopes that say do not fold) and gave it a few coats of spray lacquer.
I’ve just opened my Volksworld and saw you. Very good. I’ve been reading it since day one b7t never been in it. I was thinking of cancelling my subscription but the new new look mag seems a lot better
It seems to have a bit more readable content now after the merging with ultra, though i still tend to skim through the cheque book restos.
As the weather is so carp today i decided to have a play in the garage and try and work out what the wiper linkage is catching making it clonk. Turns out it was one of the plastic hoses for the centre demister vent. Easy fix. Spare is still holding air nicely which is more than can be said of the drivers side front which constantly drops down to 13.5psi. Doesn't go any lower than that no matter how long i leave it so i might whack 50psi in it and see how long it takes (or if it just needed a higher psi to seat the tyre properly). Checked the front wheel alignment while i was in the garage. 0.5 degrees negative camber and a lot more toe in than it should have so gonna have a play and see if i can get it within specs. Centered the steering box i think. The pitman arm is at 90 degrees to the beam anyway.
Didn't know you could see the steering box centering mark on the shaft through the inspection/adjustment hole. Its definately centered now.
Still not been out in a while as it just keeps raining and when its not i've been working on my caravelle.
Took my bug out to go shopping in Lidl on Thursday. Tyre squeal has now gone after I got the toe in within spec. Been trying to track down a clunk from the left rear quarter panel/B post/rear suspension sort of area when driving down potholed roads though. Sounds like metal to metal to my ears. At ride height there's about a fingers width gap between the bump stop and the bracket. All the bolts seem to be tight on the shocks and suspension, the torsion bar grommets are new, so are the shocks bushes and the gearbox mounts. I'm at a loss about where the clunk is coming from.
No CV joints on a swing axle bug. Gonna go underneath and check the bolts for the towbar as it mounts to the torsion tube with 2 huge U bolts and theres another mounting at the bellhousing crossmember mountings.
Check out the clearance between the top corner of the rear torsion bar cover ( four bolts) and the body, check for signs of touching on the body paint, even though at first glance it appears that there is clearance. I had this problem on my 1970, 1500 after driving across the Sahara. Tony
clunking or metal noise, maybe running boards loose if knocking or heat tube through under rear seat broke off maybe. we have a squeaking from front and had to regrease urethane arbs. I wish we had a stereo and wouldnt worry as can hear noises......
Sounds like a metal to metal clunk. Like something isn't tightened down, though i haven't found anything yet. Still haven't checked the tow bar mounts yet. I don't remember there being a clunk when i first got it back on the road which makes me think something has worked loose.
