My 1970 bug

  1. You just need an old oil can and a battered old suitcase to go on the top there and you'll be right on trend ;)

  3. I'll need to raid my parents loft and garage for those. Bound to be some retro tat in there. ;)

The first part of my resto on VZi crashed the thread at 311 pages, 3106 replies and over 481,000 views so i had to start a part 2.

  4. Finally got my arse in gear and removed the front shocks. Cut down the rubber bump stops and gained 30mm more compression stroke which will hopefully stop them bottoming out.

  5. Got the shocks back on again. Decided to double nut the top mounts as one nut was slightly loose when i removed them, even with a split washer under it.

  6. Decided to strip the ancillaries off the wbx in my caravelle to replace the seals and gaskets that are leaking more oil than the exxon valdez.
The only one that's not leaking is the gasket on the oil filler tube which is fortunate as its not possible to get a socket or spanner on one of the mounting nuts without removing the silencer and engine bar.

  7. Got the pulley off after strugging to lock the engine while i undid the nut. Who knew there was a hole in the flywheel you can put a bolt in to hold it? Tried with it in gear, wheels chocked and handbrake on and it still moved the van.
Struggling to get the old seal out as theres virtually no space.

  8. After 2 days of trying to get through to anyone on the telephone (45+ minute waits or call backs that never happen ) i finally managed to get some quotes for the bugs insurance.
Lancaster insurance came out tops. £130.40 plus £18 for agreed value which they then dropped to £110 inclusive of it.
My renewal with JK was £136 plus £15 for agreed value.

  9. when I added bug to camper insurance was £30/year....,

  10. I had one exactly the same as that , and used on my Marina- it was hanging from my garage roof until a year so ago - then took it to the tip as can no longer be fitted to modern cars.

  11. This is my only car insurance at the moment as the caravelle is off the road for the forseeable future and i'm on missus' insurance as named driver on the corolla.

Good excuse to not own a modern car. ;)
This one sat in my dads garage for years after he scrapped his Mk1 escort then sat in my shed for around 20 years after that.
Bought some new bolts for it and might give it a cleanup and a couple of coats of galvanising spray to tidy it up.

  12. Got the bug out of the garage to take some piccies for the agreed value insurance. Not often you can leave the car in the middle of the road and not have anyone complaining.

  13. It might be the only chance it gets to see sunshine this summer.

  14. Decided to use the bug to do the weekly shop. After a mile or so there was a hot smell wafting through the windows. Stopped for a look and the drivers front brake was hot as hell. Seems one of the pistons wasn't retracting fully. :(
Removed the pads and this happened. Think the years of sitting in the shed didn't do them too much good.

One piston pushes back in with finger pressure the other needed channel lock pliers to get it to move. Its only about the first 3mm of travel so i'm hoping its just a slight bit of corrosion under the dust shield.

Gave the roofrack a clean up and a few coats of cold galvanising spray and some stainless bolts. Sunroof still opens fully even with the rack on. On the second opening its below the level of the bars so the rack can still be used.

  15. Remember stripping and cleaning my 67 bug callipers every 6months as a student as they kept seizing up due to corrosion on the bores....I’ve used big red pistons/seals from e bay couple times now, good quality and value plus verry fast delivery.Have fun

  17. Popped the offending piston out and it was fine. Bore just above the inner seal had a slight bit of surface rust. Cleaned it up and reassembled and it now frees off after the brakes are pressed. Can't check it out properly yet as the new pads won't arrive until the 12th. :(
Big red didn't appear to have any 48mm seals or rebuild kit on their website.

    Cheers.

  18. Pads arrived this morning so i've popped them in. Just need to torque the mounting bolts up and bleed them and hope its fixed.

  19. Tightened the mounting bolts as i found the 16mm socket in plain sight at eye level on a shelf and bled the air out of the system. Pedal feels nice and firm now and the disc still spins nicely after the pedal is released.
Bolted the wheels on and realised that with the 1mm spacer instead of the thicker one the spokes of the empi 8 replicas just catch the caliper face. Gonna need to skim a wee smidge off with a flap wheel on the grinder. Its over an inch thick at that spot so its unlikely it'll harm it.
