Middle 3/4 and 1/4 fitting advice

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Andy hall, Sep 15, 2020.

  1. Hi gonna attempt to fit a middle opening quarter window to the sliding door of my van with factory fitted windows. Any help or advise would be appreciated as this looks awkward and never done one before, thanks in advance

If its in a metal frame that goes in place of the original glass, treat it like fitting a sheet of glass. If the flange round the edge of the new window is a lot thinner than the original glass you may need a different seal, as provided by JK with their sliding windows for instance.

As what you do would be to place the seal round the "window", or collection of panels you are fitting and then use the string round the outside edge technique to pull the outside seal past the lip on the frame , there probably isnt much difference to fitting just a pane of glass. Only avoiding dropping bits. For that there is always using bits of masking tape to hold stuff together temporarily, the adhesive doesnt leave a mess unless you leave it too long.

Also remember that glass is stiff and quite springy, it just doesnt like being bent over something sharp.

My advice would be...don't do it!
Please feel free to refer back to this advice after you've had a bash.
    Best of luck. :)

  4. Ok thanks for the reply, I tried as a whole pane of glass but the smaller window seems like it fits first in the little top notch of the sloding door frame if you understand what I'm saying? Also tried to get it in as a single unit but seems like it would be blown out with a gust of wind as nothing really keeps it in place...this is as far as I've got.
And back to zedders why would you say not to? As I'm keen to know of a down side before I fuvk the small frame etc and chip resh paint ha!

  5. 20200918_134846.jpg the highlited parts are the notch in the sloding door and the slightjoggle in the frame that looks like it locks behind the sliding door frame?? 20200918_134846.jpg 20200918_134611.jpg

It doesn’t go in like 1 pane of glass. It’s 2 separate windows effectively.

Why not to is because if/when your wrestlings are over and you get it fitted it'll be such a struggle to close the 1/4light you'll never use it and they have a tendancy to leak a bit if not properly closed. Damn annoying things in my cynical view. Love the cab ones though again I don't love the seals.i

  8. exactly about 3 years ago I replaced a leaky rear 1/4 light with what was the best replacement on the market, it has probably leaked worse than the old one. I now have a bit of rot in the bottom of the window surround to sort out. Personally I wish I'd put in a single glass window. Surely if you fit it in the sliding door you'll always have to be careful it is closed before you operate the door?

Mine had one in the sliding door which I replaced with a slider.
I've still got them in both rear offside windows though.
I reused the old seals as the new ones were completely wrong.

  10. Thanks for the cons seems to no pros, ha! But I only wanted it as sleeping in a tin top on hot nights wasnt fun with no opening windows in the rear and yes I will agree the small 1/4 seal already is a poor fit and I was gonna have a better fiddle if I managed to get it to fit but mite have to look out for another Louvre window I think...anyone wanna buy a side opening window?? :(

Sliders are good and not silly money new.
JK have s selection of middle and rear sliders for £110-135 for example.

  12. I’ve got 3 opening 1/4 lights in the back, don’t recall any problem fitting them.
Opening bit first then string the glass in as usual.
They all open ok and we do use them.

  13. Which seals did you buy? As the 1/4window seal is a bad fit, 2mm gap at top and good for at the bottom, I'd like to still get it in but if its gonna leak I'll stick with one piece glass

  14. Yeah had a look at these over the weekend and seemed a good second option I'll definitely get one in the rear next year

I don't have one myself but I don't recall ever reading thread where someone was unhappy with them. The advantage of louvres is open in the rain but if you had sliders each side I'd have thought one would always be sheltered.

  16. I only ever buy seals from Schofields

  17. Never tried fitting them, but we have 1/4 lights in all but the window behind the slider. Use them all all the time. Don’t most buses have them? Or is it a California thing?

  18. Ooh err!!

  19. that's where my 1/4 light seal and new 1/4 light came from, I should have sent it back.

I looked at a few when I did mine. None of them bore any resemblance to the original profile so I sacked it off and reused the originals.
