making some sort of heat blow the screen....options?

  1. Are the caps just tacked on or have they been seam welded?

without looking i can't remember mate, basically when i first had the van i didn't know anything about what should be on and off.....the more i have come on here the more i learned and this thread alone has educated me, i'm hoping to spend the weekend on the van tatting about and making it look as nice as i can for busfreeze so i'll have a proper look this weekend, they are deffo completely sealed - maybe by weld maybe by some sort of exhaust paste? can't recall as i didn't really pay attention when i went under the van last.

  3. They are probably just stuck on with sealent mate
If they are some gentle prising with a screwdriver should remove them

It would be a fair bit of hassle to weld them on fully

Get underneath some busses at bus freeze and take pics so you know how it should look but remember to ask the owner first otherwise they may get offended

  5. Dont forget ricky on a type 4 the engine fan doesnt blow through the exchangers, thats the job of the 'smail' fan which should be mounted on the ceiling of the engine bay, So the fan blows out both sides through two ducts (one round one squarer) that take the air to the underside of the tinware where it then goes through the outside chamber of the exchanger, (which is essensially an extra cloake over the exhaust manifold) out the other side through a couple of semi flexi pipes to where yours has been capped (the round ones)

    Simples ;)

cheers guys, if i get under the van tomorrow and i try to pull these caps off the end of the engine fan (rectangle caps) where the heat exchangers would fix will it cause damage if i leave them off?

  13. This is a great thread.

My bus Myrtle has an incomplete heater system and I did think about junking it completely as the heat exchangers were well rotten. I've seen sense though and am relaxing the exchangers and going to follow advice on here to get it working nicely.

One thing though, I am now considering doing without the snail fan and blanking the tins. If it doesn't do much then I think I would prefer a nice clean engine bay without the fan and hoses dangling down. Just rely on the engine fan.

    Views appreciated

  17. that's why I originally replaced my hx with j tubes - I had so much smoke in the cab I had to drive with my head out of the window. Once I put j tubes on all of the smoke went out the back like it was supposed to - James Bond stylie

Ok so i don't really want to start a new thread as i think a fair few of us are following this one so i'll post the pictures on here, i would appreciate advice on missing tinware and thoughts on what you would do with regards the missing pipework.
1st up inside the engine bay, is this where a pipe that would have come from the heater motor goes too? it seems in a strange place to line up with the exchanger part underneath.....could someone post a pic of the pipes in a type 4 to show me the pipes from the heater to the tin.?

    More blanked holes?

The ends of the fan casing outlets where the exchangers would attatch.

Now we go under the van, here you see the Y shaped part which is the only bit of tube i have, you will notice that someone has fitted a big scoop to the front of it to i presume force cool air over the j tubes and heads?

Here you can see how i described the pipes have been capped off, this is the one for the under rear seat, the front one under the screen is the same but i didn't bother taking the panel off to photo that.
Here's a view to the front showing lack of pipes.

    Rear view of Y piece.
The white pipe with holes in - what's that all about? it goes into the rear seats some sort of vent?
So something tinwise bolts on here i guess?
You can see the heads above, presume the heat from the j tubes goes up to the heads which isn't good?

Well you've got a heater control cable - not even been cut. It's a start.:)
