Lost Woodruff Key

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Juliet, Aug 6, 2022.

  1. Hi, recently my partner replaced the alterator in my Type 2 Bay VW Camper but dropped the woodruff key as he was doing so. I have ordered a new one but need to drive the van about 5oo miles before I can get it fitted back in. Is it OK to drive it without the key in place.

  2. Is it the fan side or the pulley side?
If it's the pulley side I'd imagine the pulley would be able to rotate on the alternator shaft without the key, which would cause your alternator to not spin and cause battery charging issues. May damage the pulley a tad too. If its the fan side, same thing may happen, but much more catastrophic results (fan not working corectly, lack of cooling = cooking the engine). Do you have anything you could fashion a small key out of?
Also where are you, I may be able to give you one if you're close to Bristol!

  3. No, if it's the alternator pulley key. The fanbelt won't drive the pulley and shaft, which means you won't have any engine cooling and you'll likely make a mess of the shaft.

It is a standard size, so you may find an engineering supply place that has one sooner than waiting for the post.

    Again: don't drive it.

  5. Of course, doh aha. Totally forgot that if the pulley isn't driving then the alternator AND fan won't be working correctly!

I can measure up the one I've got tomorrow if that's any help (as I'm currently mid engine rebuild so have the alternator separated from fan and pulley)

Cut washers in half amd stack them for an authentic VW bodge fix.

Dont drive it without the key. Even if you think the nut is tight, it will slip and cause engine edeath.

  9. Where abouts are you ??
Fitting the key is a 10minute job - seems silly to drive 500miles for such a simple fix ...

  10. Hi everyone, this is so kind and helpful - especially the offers of help. I need to work out what is best to do.

  11. I am actually near Saunton Sands, Devon, on a camp site. Does anyone know of any place near here that could fit one for me?

  12. Might be a TLB-er down that way. Anyone?

Did you drive the van down there without the key in place?

  13. How much longer are you at the campsite for? Could you order one online to be posted to the campsite next day delivery? I'd be happy to guide you changing it over the phone if you have some tools with you. Or is the person who lost the key, still there with you to help refit the alternator?

As Snotty says, there may be someone on here who's local and able to help out if not!
