On sky arts documentary being shown quite regular about the Cavern . Very informative on its history and various owners . I think its fair to say that The Cavern doesnt exits . Its just a copy of the original , with a five pounds entry fee . I gave it a miss .

  2. there was no entry fee a couple of years ago...

  3. Went to the original Cavern many times in the 60s. They have built a shopping centre on the old Cavern - complete with statues of Cilla and the Beatles. The new Cavern is in a cellar a few buildings up from the original so the stage area is very like the original - but the entrance certainly is nothing like not to mention the toilets . Took the grandson of an American friend of mine round Liverpool 7 years ago - it was free to go in then. I also drove him out to Penny lane and then to Strawberry Fields and John Lennon's place and also Paul McCartney's - but you have to pay to go on the guided tour to get inside.
Other things not to be missed - visit some of the Irish pubs like Rosie O Grady's then round the corner Walk up Bold street to see the skeleton structure of the bombed out church. Pop down to the Pier Head where there is another set of Beatle statues and get on the Ferry Across the Mersey - cheap to just get on for the round trip there and back. Go to the Albert Dock for thee Beatles Experience if you must and visit the Tate and other galleries there . We always head for the Anglican Cathedral and have lunch there but Paddies Wigwam ( RC Cathedral) is worth a visit too .

  5. Years ago when the Beatles "Experience" was just getting off the ground I went and had a look and got offered a job to stand outside and get punters in. Apparently I looked like John Lennon (which I did a bit) couldn't do it now as I look like a wrinkly old fart.

  9. That’s very kind.

take a lift or the steps to the top of the proddy cathedral (Giles Gilbert Scott’s late gothic, NR sandstone) …excellent view in all directions.
Drop into the basement of paddys wigwam, the Lutyens vaultwork is out of this world.

visit the 3 graces at the pier head, recently dropped from the UNESCO world heritage list, cos of the crap built adjacent including the crappy ‘museum of Liverpool life.’ Ellis’s Oriel Chambers is worth a look as the first ever steel framed building (apart from those two cast iron churches in Everton and st Michaels)

visit the winter garden in toxteth, (but not after dark unless you want ‘gear’ - I don’t mean gear ‘box, sore point ) .if it’s open, or the palm house in Sefton park. Walk the prom from aigburth to the pier head…or better…take one of those pink hire leccy scooters that are everywhere ..(needs a driving license to join scheme)

take in the tastes of the city….half chips half rice with curry sauce from a Chinese chippy. Or more recently halloumi fries , popular with heart surgeons, for some reason.

take a trip to the new world on a steam ship …it’s the reason the city is there…the only way to America for about 150 years
