Linux - who else?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Devon233, Sep 9, 2020.

  1. As in the title, I'm sure there must be a few out there.

I'm no 'techno, IT geek', just a regular user (don't use the terminal much) who's too tight to pay for an O/S and don't much like the Windows philosophy anyway.

Guess I'm a relative newcomer, switched about 4 years ago, starting out (as many do) on Linux Mint. Distro hopped a bit, spent some time with Manjaro but been settled on ArcoLinux for about 18 months now, XFCE being my the desktop environment of choice.

    So who else?

I'm linux mint as well. Been using the open source as a gui. Started with ubuntu a while back when my PC was slow and always wanted updates. I use the update manager regularly and will be be downloading the next supported version in due course.

  3. I started with 0.99 kernel in mid-90's when most of my friends were oohing and aahing over Windows 95, on some distro that doesn't exist anymore but I still have the CD somewhere... must find it...
I don't use it as a desktop any more, but I do use Ubuntu Server at home and I still have to provide minimal support at the office for a RHEL box cos no one else knows it. I worked for Redhat for a while (am RHCE and RHCSE) so Canonical should be my enemy but hey ho they made a decent desktop distro too which is good for newbies.
I switched to Mac in the early 2000's for desktop use because a) decent Unix machine, and b) actually the UX was vastly superior to anything else out there... and GNU and KDE desktops for me were always a pigs ear. Good attempt but no cigar... I tried to get myself assigned to the desktop team at Redhat a few years ago when I could've made a difference but they were probably suspicious as I used a Mac at home lol. Plus back then I was running a website at home on an Atari TT running on SpareMint. I still have that machine too.

Anyway these days I use a mix of Windows PC (for VR flight simming), Mac (for music production/writing, general stuff, a few games), and linux servers and android boxes. Occasionally I'll boot up a live CD (well USB these days) to see what all the fuss is about, and try to get my head around whatever new developments have happened in the last few years (like what the heck is kubernetes? :D)

  4. The Mrs is on Linux Mint too, it's the only OS (other than Win-doze) I could find that recognises the wireless adaptor on her Dell netbook thing. I'm firmly with the Arch family now, the AUR is an amazing resource and being a non tech GUI kinda guy, couldn't live without pamac.

  7. We MacBook users only have to fire up terminal, and we've got proper Unix staring us right in the face ;)

But...all are welcome. Amazing how something developed as a kind of academic exercise in the late 1970s has become the core of so much stuff in the world. It will never die.

  8. ZX81 here.

I'm just finishing loading ping pong, the tape drive has taken three years to load, I hope it hasn't corrupted.

I only use it for docker images running in kubernetes at work. Usually ubuntu or debian distros. It's purely there to host our .NET core applications. Desktops are all Windows

  10. Is this your attempt at a new made up language? Are you speaking Klingon?

  12. Interestingly, the name “Linux” is derived from the latin word meaning “those whose trousers are slightly too short”...

    Linus. As in Linus' Unix.

Debian file server www.hamble.online. 6TB RAID 5. on a UPS. On 24/7. Once made 8 months uptime.

Use Centos at work for development.
Have Lubuntu laptops at home. And an Ubuntu WSL machine on my latest laptop.

    Also use Windows 10 though.

  16. Linux mint for me and Mrs valveandy on 4 desktops and a number of laptops, 2 home servers using raspberry pi 4. Started when I didn't fancy running that new fangled windows XP and have been very happy, people ask do " do you know how to........" Reply "sorry I don't know about that I don't use Windows/Apple"

  17. That was also my attempt to get out of being the I.T guy for my family. Since 2005 not running Windows it was easy, until I came back to the U.K. in 2018 and found a lot of them running Macs. Now I am the guy who:
    • Sets up new macs and copies data across
    • Rescues deleted files
    • Deletes unwanted files
    • Rescues them again
    • Trains how to use keyboard shortcuts
    • Repairs dead PSUs in Time Capsules
    • Replaces iPhone batteries
You can run but you can’t hide.

  18. I know that, I'm down to under 15 minutes for an iPhone 6 screen replacement job:)

And how many times do you have to tell people to do backups because the hard drive will fail
