Light Winter Resto -now onto engine bay !

  1. the little pipes on the top of the tank can be replaced with standard fuel hose. Those and the fuel filler pipe will be severely perished if they've never been replaced. If you've got an upright engine you'll need to drop the engine to get the firewall off for the tank top pipes. The filler pipe can be done through the paint tin hole.

I know, I know, everyone will tell you it can't be done, its impossible yada yada yada. Having done it on 4 vans now i'm clearly lying...

If you don't plan to do any work on the engine you can drop it in around 20 minutes and just bolt it straight back up when you're done
    :)

  2. incidentally, if you've got a strong honk of fuel, no obvious signs of fuel leaking, and its not coming through your carb into the engine you can pretty much guarantee the smell is coming from the rubber hose at the tank end. It won't be from the stubby pipes on the top of the tank.

That's an engine out job on the 1600. While your engines out might as well check that clutch thrust bearing too. And then it all starts to add up in money for parts. Engine seal, rocker cover gaskets (might as well do the tappets) fuel hose, fillet neck pipe and that's before you tidy up the engine and bay. Then look at the wiring. Before you k ow it that hour a day needs to be 4 hours and then summer has come and gone  still at the end you do have a now looking engine bay.

Joker you are funny. That did make me chuckle :)

But to maximise your return you will get more Dan if you have it fixed.

  11. Well,

Didnt get around to too much this weekend but I did manage to get some prep and paint work done on some of the bits I had stripped out of the engine.

The Fan has been a pain in the arse to clean. 10 hours and two dishwasher trips later and its as good as its going to get before I paint it.

[IMG] and after paint its looking quite nice. Only a couple of imperfections which I can now pick up prior to gloss.

Some tin ware getting some love too.

  12. Nice work on the fan. My missus would kill me if i put engine parts in the oven. ;)

  14. mine hated having parts in the oven as it made the house stink.

I think you'll be better off having the pulley parts powdercoated - the fan belt will chip the paint off otherwise - especially if its on too thick. Looking good though - can't beat domestic appliances for helping the process

  17. Well I have been a busy boy over the Christmas Break. Some things I cant tell you about because a certain moderator would edit my post.

But the stuff I can tell you about.

The engine bay is practically finished.

Lets just take a reminder of what it looked like a mere few weeks ago

I was just going to leave the bay alone but then every one else started to do it, I just had to jump on the bandwagon.

This is the finished article (less wires that need a tidy)

Was going to paint the bay, but quite like the patina and it colour co-ordinates with the beige.

Got a little timing mark in mexican beige too

Would like to say a mahoosive thanks to Birdy who did an emergency call out to get it started when I had some dizzy/timing issues. What a Star.

  19. Looks good M4.

A good soak in gunk and a light rub with a scotch pad would get the injun bay looking nice and clean. Don't forget to put your fan guard back on, plumb the breather in right to stop it spraying oil mist, and get the wires away from the fan hub - you want all those coil wires tight and secure and out of the way. I'd also be tempted to do away with the connection you have in the blue wire which is hanging beneath the coil. I can see the bare connection - I assume its a negative feed and not live? It could be the picture but it also looks like you have washers missing on the fan hub?

And for anyone who reads thesamba - are those the correct carbs?
    :)

  20. Cheers mate. washers are on the fan hub and the wires are in need of some tlc. Believe it or not, that bare wire is a live! which has been bodged some point down the line. Its also not fused so this will be a good time to sort it all out. Wires were only whipped back on to make sure she starts, same with the oil breather kit, needs final connections.

I dont read the samba - whats the deal with the carbs, mine are 40 IDFs
