LeMans 2021 trip.

  1. Thinking on going with my dad as I have heard it is a great weekend.

Choice of cars to go in:

    My 2010 MX5
    His 2012 BMW Z4
    My camper.

My dad is in his 70s and is up for staying in a tent but doesn't have great hips. Watching him get in and out of his Z4 is hilarious.

I fancy taking the camper for luxury on site bit it quite a distance from Norfolk. I took the bus around Dorset a couple of years ago and had no problems and it is pretty reliable.

What's your experiences on going long distances in a bus? What spares did you take?

    Cheers.

  2. Do it, great trip and no problem for a camper.
There’s a few of us on here who did big European trips last year, ours was 3k miles. Took an alternator belt and a set of plugs, didn’t need them but bought a new coil in Bastogne, that was our only issue.
Been to LeMans 10 times, several in a 1926 Sunbeam with my now 80 year old father in law!

  3. Camper without a shadow of doubt.

When you are there it will be much comfier than a tent.
Let your dad stay in the bus and you can sleep in a tent!
Plus it will be far more of an experience than going in the other vehicles

1000 mile round trip, will be fine

Make sure you have good break down cover just in case

    Take:
    Fan belt
    Spare clutch & accelerator cables
    Spare points?
    Your usual spare bits

  4. I carry most of these anyway. Definitely get Europe breakdown plus all the other extra paperwork I will have to get now we are out.

  6. Give it a few long trips out before you go to Le Mans

  7. Go for it, TE is a long trip for me ;) Did just short of 4000 miles all told last year. Spare coil, plugs, fan belt, rocker gaskets, dizzy cap rotor arm, fuses etc and my tool box.

The brother in law does Le Mans every year with a group and I think he’s taken his 50’s Bentley before. He lives on the south coast and I think gets the ferry from southampton, then the drive on the French side is quite easy and not too long.

French A roads and Motorways and a doddle to drive :)

similar can be said for going to Spa in Belgium, the worst bit of the journey is apparently to the ferry in the uk!

Go for it.....I normally do a tour of devon and Cornwall and really don't give it too much of a thought...but doing the Normandy battlefields fills me with dread.....where's the logic in that, it's got to be similar mileage.

Done lemans in a triumph spitfire and
been round Holland and a bit of Germany in the camper 3 times The only issue apart from a bit adjustments was a rocker cover gasket leaking witch I fixed in a German car park with on I had.

One of the things is to make sure you use the van beforehand is not fair to drag it out of hibernation and then expect it to do big mileage.

If going for breakdown cover read the small print. Most will only recover the van when they have a few so could be months and often only up to the value of the van. We used the AA.

  14. That`s the ticket , whatever happens you`ll be able to deal with it but AA cover is probably a good idea if your dad`s tagging along - i`d suggest taking along an awning or sun canopy for a bit more shade as it can get quite hot ...

ENJOY - if it`ll do a thousand miles over here it`ll do a thousand miles abroad

  17. Sometimes I wonder how any of you would survive without my sage wisdom. the answer to your question is blindingly obvious. You attach a trailer to the x5. You travel to Le Mans in comfort with air conditioning and the ability to not drop below 50mph on every hill. When you arrive just roll the bay off of the trailer. No worries about it breaking down then. All of the advantages of being in a camper with none of the disadvantages of being terrified of every noise and the fuel economy of a space shuttle. It’s a win win. Plus you’ve got the bmw to pop into town and not loose your pitch.

    Thank me later.

  18. I'm not sure how to fit a tow bar to a BMW Z4 !

  19. Lol. That will teach me to read without my glasses on. I thought you said 2010 x5

towing with a z4 could be interesting
