Just Kampers door handle set

Along with everyone else I wanted one key for every lock. I thought about following the guide to change the wafers in my old locks but I really wanted more secure locks and a key that would work either way round.

I bought the full lock black handle set from Just Kampers. Cost, in January 2014, was £124.50. It was the 'complete lock set' JK part number J18742. This bundle includes every lock and handle on the outside of the van, including the sliding door handle.

Do NOT buy the first lock bundle you see on their website, it's called 'lock set (does not include sliding door handle) J14060. This set costs £179.50. £55 more for fewer handles?

Here is what you get in the post.

They feel very heavy and well made with no rough castings. The VW logo'd key comes with one spare and a code tag for reordering extra spares. The keys slide into each lock smoothly and work either way round with a satisfying action. The black coating is very smooth and looks like it will last well. Time will tell on that subject,

    Fitting

I started off fitting the rear tailgate and engine lid locks. Both fitted perfectly and are a perfect copy for the originals which I was removing. Both of those locks have a tapered tag at the top which slides under the panel to secure the top of the lock. The new locks needed gentle persuasion with a hammer and a piece of wood to get them to seat fully. I think this was because they were new and unworn. I expect that if I ever removed them the refitting would be much easier. I reused the original fitting screws and they fitted the new locks perfectly. A couple of years ago I had replaced all the lock gaskets and they too fitted the lock profile as well as the old locks.

Moving onto the cab handles it was a simple matter of removing the old ones, reusing the gaskets and screws and fitting the new ones. Again a perfect match.

Onto the sliding door now and this is where it goes downhill.

My van is right hand drive withe the sliding door on the left. The handle is a perfect fit and the fixing screw goes in like it should. So far so good but I have the door with a separate lock underneath the handle.

The key barrel for this lock has a offset pin which operates the locking mechanism.

The offset pin sits into the oval frame in the body of the lock and the barrel is fastened in place by one screw onto the flange on the left. Here is a picture of the old and new barrels and you can see the offset pin is 180 deg out.

I believe this barrel is designed for a left hand drive van with the sliding door on the right. When the barrel is fitted into my lock the pin does not locate into the lock operating frame.

The offset pin is held onto the barrel by a set screw and locates onto a square drive so I decided to remove the pin and rotate it by 180 deg. It turns out this is not possible because of the spring locating cutout.

To rotate the offset pin a new cutout is needed to allow the spring to fit and operate properly. I decided that it would be better to chop a section out of the barrel body rather than the offset pin disc as there is a lot more material in the body so I wouldn't weaken the lock too much.

The white paper is there to cover up the lock code numbers. I don't want any scallywags nicking my bus.

Ready for cutting, I masked the lock with blue tac to stop any swarf getting in. If you look closely you can see the scribe marks showing the quadrant that needs to be removed.

The finished lock barrel beside the old one

Space for the picture which hasn't yet loaded into photo bucket. I'll stick it in later.

    So summing up:

    value for money 10.
    Overall Quality. 10
    Fit, left hand drive. 10
    Fit, right hand drive. 8
    Appearance. 10

Hope this is some use to somebody. :)

I've just realised that I haven't discussed the ignition lock yet and that's because I haven't fitted it yet. I'll add to this thread if I experience any problems. I also have an extra lock barrel and I've no idea what that's for.

  2. Cheers for that, very useful :)

  3. Nice write up. Couldn't you just take out the lock innards for the slider and swap between the two barrels? I guess this covers the door locks only, so you're now on 2 keys, or are you resetting the ignition to match the door locks?
    :)

No you can't swop the innards because the barrels are inherently different. The key/lock mechanism is a more modern system which uses pins rather than wafers.

No I haven't fitted it yet but the set includes an ignition lock as well so when I've fitted it I'll have one key for all six locks.

That's the genuine VW lock set looking at it, we used the very same with no issues at all :)

  6. Is the lock you have spare for the glove box, maybe?

  7. Ah, didn't realise they were different. It's a bargain then if it comes with the new ignition barrel too
    :)

Is yours right hand drive? The pin wouldn't go anywhere near the operating lever inside my slider lock

Now there's an idea. I haven't got a lock on mine at the moment but I'll have a look tomorrow.

Ahh ours is left hand drive, that's why all was well!

Yes, I'm well pleased with it and I think it was a good price as well.

Ahh! At least that confirms my guess as to why mine didn't fit straight away.

  13. Nice one. To be fair it does say on the jk item page that it will need. Butchering for rhd. Or is that only appeared after you complained?!
Why can't somebody do a chrome set though?

I haven't complained and it was probably there when I ordered but to be honest I was rushing to get the order in before they realised that the more complete set of handles was priced £55 cheaper than the incomplete set. As it happens they already knew and it wasn't a mistake in the pricing. I still can't understand it though.

These ones are straight from the VW factory in Brazil and I suppose they only do them (or did them) in black and for left hand drive.

They are good value and of good quality too :)

  17. another classic....sell new parts that you then have to perform surgery on to make them work:rolleyes:
Thanks for sharing the how to @sANDYbAY....

    • hi all just wondering how you remove the barrel from the original sliding door lock,i was going to have a go at rekeying mine but it seems to be crimped together any one done it

Ok, a few more pictures and onto the ignition lock.

This is the cutout required to fit the Brazil barrel into a RHD slider. This photo I took halfway through making the cutout. It needs to be flat, smooth and deep enough to allow the 'ears' of the spring to rotate freely.

And this is the barrel in situ,

I thought I'd sorted it at that point but there was a problem, :(

Notice how the barrel is ever so slightly proud of the housing, that is how it should be.

Cutting out the section of housing to convert from LHD to RHD removed enough material to allow the barrel to slide into the housing by a couple of mm which made the lock bind. :( You can just see the new cutout at the opposite end to the key.

I thought about trying to make a stop at the cut end of the barrel but there really isn't much space so I took the barrel out completely and fitted an 'o' ring just behind the key hole which butted up to the nylon bush you can see here covered in grease.

It prevents the barrel pushing in when the key is fitted and the lock now works perfectly. :)

The spare key barrel which comes with the lock set is for the petrol filler cap which apparently is different to our vans. If I can lay my hands on a locking petrol cap I will see if I can make the Brazil barrel fit.

So just the ignition lock to go.

Here we go then, the last bit of this review and 'how to'.

To change the ignition barrel the steering wheel has to come off.

Don't do what my van's previous owner did and try to prise up the silver ring to get the horn button out. The horn button is the black plastic ring and fingernails should be enough force to flick it up.

Here you can see the thin wire spring which holds the button in. You can also see the damage caused by the PO and their screwdriver.

Under here you need to remove the three screws and disconnect the horn wire

Make sure you don't lose the three springs or the plastic insulator sheet.

This is the main nut which holds the wheel on.

I used a 15/16th socket but its probably 24mm really, my metric sizes only go up to 22mm.

Once the spring has been removed and the loom plugs have been taken off from the bottom you can pull off the indicator and wiper stalks.

Don't forget the two windscreen wash pipes.

Now you have to deal with the anti theft bolt which sits deep inside this hole in the cowling.

You can also see the two loom plugs removed earlier and the windscreen wash pipes.

This is the offending anti tamper bolt and I had to remove the front seat to get enough room and the right angle to hammer a Phillips screwdriver into the head to unscrew it.

I'll be cutting a slot into it before I refit it.

    Almost there,

Three bolts hold the cowling on now

    One here, 13mm

    Another the other side

And the third (10mm) right up underneath the windscreen

    And off it comes.

Now's a good time for a cup of tea in a Pink Floyd mug, other bands are available.
