Perhaps we can agree then that "if you buy an old car, it's more likely to need repair than a new one and if you thraMarmite, it's even more likely to need repair". :)

All the thrashing and repair and mpg will also vary from area to area. Where I live in the fens it's as flat as a pancake. With a good wind behind me I can average 75mpg in my Golf. If I lived where Para lives, that would be 50. But the roads here are awful and your suspension takes a battering - it's common for people to crack the sumps on their cars...

  6. Agreed 100% ( its the previous owners thrashing that concerns me)

It sounds your roads are like ours

Its killing my car on these lanes and it cost me a lot in suspension parts last mot

cam belt is very straight forward, couple of hours 1 tensioner/ idler. no real special tools needed for it either just a couple of drill bits and a piece of flat steel( i could lend you the proper kit for th cost of post) no reason for the turbo to fail they are fairly low pressure anywho. people who dont know diesels to well chuck new heads at stuff that doesnt warrant it, seems to be an upcoming trend. the turbo is fairly easy to replace again a couple of hours and not silly money new 200-300. the 1600td are rock solid and run forever the 1900tdi is based on it too. get 200k out of them. also it lhd so will most likely be german and have been tuv'd regularly. most bits for the t25 are readily available genuine vw still too, i would say a t25 would be much cheaper than a bay to run. if you treat her nice she will do you proud and i may be rich enough to buy it off you when you sell it :).

donkey diesel for me, hated them when doing my apprenticeship on them but they are superb now even though mines 13 years old and got 193k on it. pretty similar mpg round town or motorway. so you gonna buy this sweet t25 or just throwing your toys about in frustration at the long term bay. i havent finished my bay yet and am seriously considering a t25 again and the multivan would be ace as a daily :)
