Errr. Not quite. We've a little bit of fire damage to address around the output flanges and the diff lock sleeve but nothing major. It's all in really good nick so far. Advice is to stick it back in and drive, if there are selection issues or gear jumps then, we'll deal with it accordingly. All @pkrboo has to do now is make a start on the metal work..
He did and it arrived today. Im going to fit it later then spend the evening opening and shuttimg the door and watch the lights go on and off. It's the new going down the pub....
Hmm so I took the doka off the road as insurance ran out and seemed a good time to get in with making it a syncro, gearbox out first and I found a tiny bit of rust!!! So currently trying to sort that before I decide whether to actually syncro it or not. Sent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
**Shock horror an actual VW post on a VW forum** More Chopping done and a bit of welding. I have also found a chap in Germany who has reproduced the middle crossmember along with the syncro mounting points. Pricey but a no brainer for a rust free solution. Also started dissecting the syncro rear spring mounts. Sent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
Have you seen the samba thread just started by a guy who has bought two T2's to make a 4WD with a 3.6L Subaru? It hasn't got interesting yet... https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=742265
Progress, more chopping, and new piece arrived. Lots of chopping and prep work and then maybe some welding. Full back end now stripped out, (trailing arms, suspension etc. Might as well replace the suspension spring plates for the proper syncro ones. Plus they are rotten. I was having second thoughts about going syncro but I'm in too deep now to not just get on and do it Sent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
havent updated this for a while, the rear crossmember has been replaced(thanks @davidoft) and its all painted and stone chipped now. then weather happened and other work and other VW's, so no real change, well, apart from selling the diesel engine so its defo going to be a subaru now. and I sold the Syncro stuff as I realised the chassis will probably need more work in the future and making it a syncro is probably not the best idea. I may make it a 2wd with diff lock though
:-( How do the gearboxes stand up to Subaru power through them- they seem a bit of a weak point in T3s generally.
2wd ones are as good as a bay ones I think, I reckon it's more that they have all been used and abused. Torque kills gearboxes more than horsepower Sent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
I guess they are just old - still seems in my brief foray into t3 stuff that more questions/problems are asked about gearbox issues than on t2 stuff apart from how much money can I sell a 6 rib for .
The problem is gearboxes go on and on without any attention whatsoever until someone changes the use and probably just refreshes the oil and maybe some new seals and the hockey stick bit. Meanwhile the bus has been restored twice, painted 5 times and is on it's 8th engine. I ripped a main shaft bearing cage to pieces by spinning up to 6,500+ rpm. It was 50 years old though.
