  3. i'm keeping the costs down by doing the prep myself... i can't afford to pay him as photographer too! :D

Mick knows his stuff; old school welder, restoring mini's as a hobby, worked on modern cars and gluing them etc. he said he thought it'd be worse than it is and doesn't seem at all worried. phew :)

  4. I’ve dug these out for homework. I think there’s another in the bus but that’s up in the air!

    Good start!

Doesnt look too bad under the pans tbh. The inner sills normally fall away with the pans!

  10. maybe, we'll see. I'll be overhauling the bumpers too, but am leaving all those bits for later. while i have a ramp, by golly i'm going to make use of it! :D

i did bare metal the bug *ahem* many moons ago, and the camper when i first got it... but never did take the pans off. oops

  12. Some front end cleaning tonight, no pics but just less surface rust than before.

N/s belly pan removal to reveal a decent inner sill -which was a surprise -but strengthener and outer are shot.

The schofield shopping list is getting longer. Need to clean up and check jacking points and outriggers next time.

Am pooped, covered in rust and relieved

  15. btw folks, if any of you notice any glaring issues/problems from the pics, please let me know. I'm winging this :D

The sills; inner, outer and strengtheners will all be replaced as will the pans (it's a devon roof cut) and obvious lower repair panels.

  17. Excuse me for being stupid, but do you need to put pans back on.Lots of vans don't have them do they actually make a difference

  18. Yes, schofields have them, thankfully :)

  19. I’ve looked into this and asked folk in the know - due to the larger hole cut in the roof for a Devon top (mine is) the pans were structural too.

I’m going to trust that Volkswagen knew what they were doing on this one :) but I won’t be welding the new side pans on this time - bolts only.
