I’ve changed the rear wheel hub nut locking device from a split pin to an ‘R’ clip. Just wondered what the MoT inspector will make of it ? Stirlingmoz
Take some split pins along and if it fails you can fit them and comply right away. Otherwise keep it like that. I like it. It could be as iconic as punk safety pins.
You will laugh when you offroad past a paticularly vicious bramble or a bit of fence wire and it pulls straight out... Basically that clip is for static use and it is not balanced .. if it gets a bit loose it could just spin out. Have a look at "spring loaded drop nose pin" as a possible more meaningful looking bling. Or even a shoulder bolt with a long shoulder and a short thread poking out with a nyloc nut. Also one plus with a split pin is the free loop for driving the stupid thing out if the nut loosens slightly and grips it.
How does the wheel turn if not driven by the drive shaft which is what that nut is clamping to the splines on the hub ? The ends of the split pin or clip are rotating as the bus moves forward. Err.. Unless this is actually a trailer queen where the wheels wont go round because they rub on the arches...
Yes that’s the right answer You won’t really bend an R clip Well you could try ... but would risk a trip to the Eye unit . What happened? Well I was trying to bend an R clip on my VW wheel hub and a bit went in my eye.. You silly boy said the doctor, Don’t you know that they are hardened sprung steel, why didn’t you just put a new split pin in!
The MOT tester will consider whether the R clip is secure. It does look a bit stretched over the nut. It could be considered an inappropriate repair.
After all the 405 ex Talbot Alpine made in Ryton was a last gasp of the British motor industry .. so it was entitled to silly things, including tax break for being made in the UK.
Sort of. Got the usual fail on a brake light and a then a pass right afterwards Got an advisory on a split ball joint boot on one of the torsion arms. Otherwise a pass Stirlingmoz
