Intermittent short loss of power

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Andyvan1, Jul 10, 2020.

  1. Hi All, I’ve started to experience very short bursts of loss of power . It started recently and only for a short time it kangaroos in the 30 mph range then it picks up and is totally ok. It only happens at lower speeds , once or twice in a hour run.
I have a std 1600 with a 009 dizzy, the points gap is good and are newish along with a capacitor and dizzy cap.
Im not good with carbs - mine is a solex 34 s.
What things should I be looking at to solve this issue?
    Cheers

  2. Thinking aloud.
    Idle jets blocked?
    Is your ignition timing correct?

The 009 with a 1600 and the solex 34pict3 is not a good match imo. Once I changed my 009 out for an svda the low end really came alive.

Which gear are you in at 30mph?
    2nd gear..too high RPM
    3rd gear ...correct
4th gear .. too low RPM .. will buck if it is running too rich..

    Loose electrical wire.
    Bad plugs
    Dirty distributor cap and leads

  4. I have heard this but the 009 does work with the carb , I understand it is not the best set up but it’s been working well for the last 4 yrs this is a new issue, and the van drives great ... mostly!
Can I just unscrew the idle jet ? And how do I clean it? Sorry I have no experience of this .
Should I do the volume jet as well ?
I have basic understanding 0nly so any advice is great

  5. I’m in 3rd .... it’s a new issue and it seems to correct itself but the fault isn’t going away... I noticed it currently only occurs at low speeds at 40-65! is running great.
Thanks I will check HT leads.
The plugs are 2 yrs old 3000 miles and I took out #2 and it was good !
The leads are again newish .
The rotor arm, cap are all good condition.
I wondered if it was fuel related.
The fuel pump is 4 yrs old.
The fuel filters 3 yrs old , but looked ok.
I was going to change just to knock it off the list.

If it occasionally pops as well, I would check all the spade connections round the coil for tightness.
Mine went silly after three round trips to Bristol, it was idling on three cylinders, jerking and backfiring as I put my foot down, but once it got going it was still going up hills as fast as ever but preceded by a fair bit of bucking.

I got a rag and wiped down the inside and outside of the distributor, removed all the spark plugs and wiped off their insulators, reset the gap to 0.6mm, tightened a few female spade connectors , put it all back and its perfectly OK .
The new spark plugs I bought expecting to have to use new plugs are going into my spares kit in the bus..

  7. Sounds electrical. Loose connection?

  8. If it’s only doing it after a prolonged run and not straight away on short journeys could it be carb icing?

  9. It’s doing it on shortish runs !
But I went in it for an hour and a bit last week with no issues but yesterday on a 30 min run it did it 3 times all at lower speeds. Gave it a thrash on the way home and it was ok.

  10. I’m going to pull out the plugs and change the fuel filter, the leads to the coil and out look good.
I’m leaving the carb alone until last ...
I will need to read up first .
Otherwise I will need a garage to look at it.
Points , timing , valve clearances are all good .

    Thanks

  11. ?
