interior panel covering?

  1. hey guys, ive got a full set of 9 mdf interior panels that im going to cover.

my plan is to use spray adhesive to stick thin foam on, then spray adhesive the covering on.

will spray adhesive soak through the material? I was planning on using some generic material, not vinyl. But if it will soak through i may have to re-think.

or if it will, has anyone done it without spray adhesive? like pulling the material tight and then stapling?

    cheers

  2. Hi, we did exactly the same, we sprayed the door cards with glue then when tacky applied a thin wadding which comes on a roll (looks like cotton wool) then sprayed that with glue again waiting until tacky then covered with our material, the material was very heavy/thick cotton not sure what they called it! We used flooring spray adhesive which we also thought would soak through & tested it before we started, worked very well.

Oh and have a roll of gaffa tape handy I used this as staples are too long & worked very well securing the corners which don't stick so well with the glue! The only problem I had fitting them was when drilling holes to fix into van the wadding wrapped itself round the drill bit so if I was to do again I would source a thin foam material similar to what is behind the original vinyl!

Here's some pics of the finished panels!

We are very happy with the finish especially for how little it cost us...

  3. Hi,

I've done the same on mine - covered a set of new MDF boards. They've come out really well.

This is the covering material I have used :-

Comes with spray glue as well. It is fairly forgiving when you fit it and will stretch a little. Glue needs to be applied in a fairly warm environment - probably best to heat the garage if doing it now!!

Will try to dig out a picture up of how it looks...

  4. Hi that looks so cool ;) when i do it i spray the board then put the sponge on, then then use thicks a fix or bostick contact glue around the back edge, then pull the cloth round tight and use tape to hold it if you like then, you dont have to put glue on the front. hope this helps.

  5. This is how the veltrim comes out:-

    Work in progress:-

I 'nick' the set veltrim with a stanley and then drill the hole, countersink it and then use a self tapping screw to attach the panel. Once done - run around the whole bus with a small amount of the supplied trim adhesive to glue down the 'nick' slits. 8)

  6. That looks good Mr G what did you cover the bed with alcantara?

  7. The bed cushions were done professionally for me.

Believe it or not they are a new type of vinyl!! It is even washable in the washing machine. Looking at it you would think it was suede or alcantara :)

  8. That sounds very interesting do you have a link to the vinyl?

  9. I started this thread and then realised i never got anywhere with it..

some of the holes in my new panels aren't right so i'm going to check all the panels and drill new holes where needed etc this weekend.
i have 3mm MDF which is prone to moisture and warping so going to seal it with the trusty 1pt PVA to 5pts water.

    my next question is..

does anyone know what bungs I need... i hear there are 2 different types?

    loads of these...

  10. I would also suggest that you make sure you use high temp spray glue! Did mine in standard spray adhesive and in the summer when temp in the van went up it became tacky again and came off!

  12. I found it much easier to 'nick' the veltrim, open it up slightly and then screw a hole in panel and use self tapping screw to mount the panels. Easy to glue the veltrim down when finished.

    Gives an invisible finish.

  13. @paradox. I don't have an online link but can PM you the persons details that did the upholstery if you would like to call them and find out manufacturer details. They are only a small outfit so don't have a website. Let me know....

    Cheers,
