  3. Im looking for some easy wins. Better output and possibly better efficiency (fuel economy). So going down the carbs route. Plus - Im told my DFEV isnt efficient and doesnt get the best from the engine!

Wont be doing heads until I need to break it down but a ligt tickle on the top end woudnt go a miss I suppose, ie valves and flowing but will my heat exchangers kill that as dont want to go J Tubes!

  4. you won't loose too much in the heat exchangers... from what work I've done with oval port heads, then it's usually a case of the head port is really small, and the heat exchanger isn't too bad, in fact it's bigger than the head port

  5. Im enjoying thinking this through as Ive been agonising over this for a while (ie whether to do or not) hopefully will spur me on a bit. My carbs are up in the loft! Guess they will be on the kitchen table by Sunday and I will see what I dont have.

Got a dead simple question -(or two). Are the bakelite spacers a must and which gaskets to use. I have acouple of sets of the grey paper type but are the ally crush type preferred?

I have a set of DRLA 40's on my 2.0L type 4. I recently had it on a rolling road for the purpose of improving mpg a little. I was given my base jet sizes from the engine builder and it all ran nice and smooth and seemed to have reasonable power. The rolling road only lead to a change in my Idle jet from a 60 down to a 50/52.

The carbs are now set up as

    Main 140
Idle 50 was told that 52's may give slightly better results but didn't have any to hand.
    Air 180
    Em Tube 9164.1
    Starter 95
    Pumps 35
    Chokes 32

These settings on a standard type 4 with a Web 86 Cam produced 113BHP.

I didn't bother with the bakerlite spacers and haven't encountered any problems yet. I have done 90minutes at 75 mph and stopped and started fine.

Hope some of this info is of use to you type 4 guys.

  7. Thanks mate. Dont know how I missed that thread tbh. Output is pretty impressive and your running 32 vents. Whats the bottom end like, does it pull ok?

  12. I started this thread in July 2012, when I bought my manifolds. Now actually have the carbs themselves - feel like I'm rushing into this a little o_O

Renewed focus: Will update the first post as I go - looking to have a butchers at what I have (jets etc) before I put an order into Euro Carb - also have the Dellorto Superperformce book (arrived today) which should help muchly.

  13. HIya - well it took me a while to get around to it but mine are on. After a brief dalliance with 32 vents I found that 30s were better and im running a bit rich I think ive got 135 or 137 mains. Anyway - can tell you my current set up which hasnt been rolling roaded as yet if you want (will need to check). Ran 32s and 30s back to back and 30s were much better.

If yours comes with 28s as standard then take my advice and just fit them!!!! Run it and see how you get on. It will be much more driveable and you can go up on sizes when youve got the cash.

Dont get too excited about the book other than for initial seeting prior to fitting them which is a must!!!

  14. You don't think it was the precision of the 30s that made them better ?

  17. All too technical for me. Bought mine off eBay from a t25 2 litre. 40mm on stubby manifolds. Bolted them on and they worked out of the box. Rolling road jetted them for my 1800 engine, they're now on a 1700 80hp 914 engine. Got some nice big k+n filters so loads of induction roar.

Haven't had this up on the rolling road for a proper tune yet but it's much stronger than the 1800 and goes like stink.

The hex linkage is functional but pretty crappy and I'd prefer something which would be a bit more precise
    :)

  18. The 1700 is where it's at ....

  19. loved my 1700 but parts were hard to get at the time so i went 2 litre!

  20. I like em, torquey, revvy. Just what you need. Its perfect for the doka.
    :)
