Ignition Coil Replacement

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by JOHN HOWARD, Jul 30, 2022.

  1. Hi All,

My ignition coil is in the process of packing up (intermittent poor performance after the coil heats up, orange spark, etc).

Finding a replacement for the Bosch blue coil (bosch part number 221 119 027, OEM 043-905-115/C) seems impossible at the moment. These two coils are that part, I think they are the same just separate models???

I tried the following WAI version after a recommendation from GSF and it worked well for an hour, after which it stopped producing a spark, so I'm taking it back today.

So my question, is what alternative coil would you recommend
that a) doesn't cost the earth and b) doesn't require replacing the HT leads and/or other components (i.e. flamethrower is )?

    Cheers,
    John

When you keep trying new/different coils and they keep failing, maybe the problem lies elsewhere. Could be a bad connection in the wiring elsewhere getting hot/high resistance for example. Might even be this happening inside the ignition switch. Have you checked the voltage at the coil supply when it's running right and when it's not? If you have points have you tried replacing the condenser?

Yes, could be its not turning off the ignition power properly. Or as @Zed says a faulty condenser may be allowing high voltages on the coil. It would also give a weaker spark.

Maybe even if points are worn, points gap wrong but timing is set OK.. the rotor arm points progressively further away from the peg in the distributor when the points finally open. Also leading to higher voltages on the coil..

Sometimes when its idling you can start to hear clicking from around the distributor when this happens.. the massive spark inside the cap gets louder than the proper few mm long spark from rotor to peg ..

You dont by any chance have an electronic ignition.. suspect them before the coil.. I have a line of Bosch coils then I went back to points...lower resistance coils make the electronic points unit hotter and cause any misbehaviour earlier...

I am using a VW branded black coil, much cheaper than the Bosch blue.. I think Heritage have them.

  5. ^this. I'd suspect the problem lies elsewhere. It's difficult to damage an ignition coil.
