    Use a waterproof varnish.
Good protection from the elements and looks good.

  5. I dismantled the roofrack outside dubmonkies house to get it in the car. I then sanded each of the wooden slats to remove as much of the old varnish as possible. This left a nice redwood. I then used a yacht varnish from a well known company. It did exactly as it said on the tin

I would use an exterior high build wood oil suitable for garden furniture or clear yacht varnish.

I'd go with yacht varnish too.

  13. by weather protection i meant sun as well as rain. most varnishes fade and peel more when left in the sun for long periods. the yacht varnish should protect the best

You can stain and seal with yacht varnish. Yes B&Q sell it.

The oil will penetrate and thus will not peel and will give UV protection.
