How would you build one if you had the chance?

  1. I have a 2l t4 engine. It was put in (apparently) 11 years ago and to be honest has run well ever since i have had the pig. (bus).

We have just gone to lands end and back with no real problems so I shouldnt be complaining.. :) Although she rattles like an old morris minor at the moment. :'(

However this winter I am going to take her out and apart (my first go at this  ) and i want to while its in bits rebuild her with as much reliable power that I can.

So those with experience if you had (not a bottemless pit) but money put aside, and wanted to have a good strong reliable engine what would you change while its on the bench? and why?

I have a bluebird twin tip pipe and webber carbs so I want it to eventually run with them im just thinking of the internals..

  2. Be interested to follow this, i've often wondered what these engines need to make them a bit less juicy?

  3. Best engine I ever had,,
1800 heads,,cause of the valve zize, 41/34mm. 96mm cylinders and pistons, I used AA.
Cam from european motorworks, 296 degree,312 is also good. Feed this combo with double webbers or simular carbs, I used a bas exhaust, a copy will do fine.
Set comp at aprox 9-9,5. voiila :)
This will give you a strong reliable motor with anything from a 100 to a 110 hp at the wheels.
If you have a 002 gearbox it will acclerate a bit faster than if you use a 091 box, but the 091 will lower your rpms by 400-450 driving in 60mph.

  4. When I rebuilt an engine (2ltr straight 6) I had the crank reground and balanced, new big end bearings, had rebored and new rings, new small end bearings, head skimmed (not to increase compression, just to ensure true) and new valves. It was a pig regrinding them to seat them in but gave a great sense of satisfaction when I put it all back together again (and it worked).

Not sure about your engine though. It's all new to me but will follow with interest.

It you want strength and reliability then stick with stock (other than the carbs and exhaust (is the exhaust 4-1?)) and spend the money on getting everything balanced properly.
