How reliable has your Pertronix electronic ignition been?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by IZZYBAY, Oct 18, 2017.

  1. Have had mine in for now about 4 years and about 5,000 miles and so far fingers crossed has been good. Giving better running and starting, BUT others are saying they are not reliable!. A friend of mine with Pertronix module and flame thrower coil fitted for about 7 years and has just died completely while on the road. Just wondered if others have any views on them? Dont want to go back to points but have some doubt now with this module!

  2. i read mixed reviews so i stumped up the extra and went for the 123 ignition. touch wood it's been spot on.. fitted for 18 months so far.

  5. Eleven years now and faultless. It never drifts off and I recently left the ignition on all day by accident and it didn't burn out. This is the ignitor 1 with a stock coil.

Why worry if its been faultless for 4 years?

You’ll get good and bad reports for all ignition types but the Pertronix module seems to be as good as any. The failure is more likely to be the flame thrower coil.

I believe you can damage electronic modules by testing for spark with a big gap. If you use a spark plug its Ok. Its all to do with the primary voltage rising until it sparks on the secondary. High secondary voltage = high primary voltage = more stress.

With a condenser in the same situation the capacitor breaks down but heals. Something that can happen many times before failing.

Solid state switches are not so forgiving unless they are well wrapped in protection circuits Which e.g. the Accuspark I stripped down did not seem to have .

  10. I respectfully decline to answer cos as soon as I do it will break!

  11. I ran one for a couple of years and it was fine. The Flamethrower coils are more likely to expire, from what you hear.

  12. Mines been very reliable
It’s stayed in its box in the shed and not moved
I’d imagine a accuspark one would have wondered off by now getting up to all sorts of mischief

  13. 7 years and no problem

I think mine has been in place for a good 6-7k miles, maybe more.

  15. Like the OP, I had one for 4 years and about 5k miles, with no problems. Then I fried it by connecting the wires to the coil the wrong way round after a rebuild.
Bought another 2 years ago, and 3k miles. Still fine, no issues. Standard coil both times.
Reading between the lines, no-one is putting huge mileages through it. Any high milers out there want to respond?

  16. Had mine in for 7 years never gone out of timing. Absolutely bang on and no problems.

Pertronix is the one points replacement to go for in my opinion.

My score to date. Killed a Pertronix with swapped leads . duh!
Accuspark died at about 40k miles .. hard to start then suddenly acted as a rev limiter..
Current Accuspark still going at 10k miles.

    Crank fire project underway.
