How much should it cost ....

  1. ... to get a new bonnet for my 53 plate VW Polo ... it will obviously need to be painted up to match the rest of the vehicle (8 year old blue), but as a guide what should I expect to pay?!?

The local bodyshop that has a very good reputation has just quoted me £600 - £700 ... eek! Matt says he can get the new bonnet on-line for around £120 - £150 ... so I am not sure if they are pushing it with the quote!

Oh - and if I find out who the little 'tyke' was who decided that sitting on my bonnet with the full force of his/her rather large backside on Tuesday night was a good idea then they will discover how cross I am about it!!! Yep, bum shaped dent and a fist ... arrggghhh!!

Oh well ... now to get it replaced as it is too bent to be knocked back into shape.

Thank you in advance for your helpful comments :)

Is there anything on ebay or any Volkswagen breakers down your way? I'd have thought you could get one cheap enough for the year, £700 seems steep

It looks like you can get a new bonnet for well under £100. So that's £600 for the paint - I think not.

  4. Sign up with one of those online parts finder jobbies, and get a bonnet from a breaker in a matching colour?

Look on ebay for one - and you should be able to get one in the same colour and not need to get it sprayed - most people breaking cars don't advertise the bonnet only so put in breaking green polo or whatever the colour is.

We found Mrs Moons a tangerine one for her 206 which is a rare colour - they are out there on ebay!

  7. Hi Daisymae i work in Daventry and we have a small body shop if you would like a quote we can give a more reasonable one, I would stay clear of intapart unless you have lot's of money as they are extremely expensive! But don't forget that you can either do it to way's they will do there best to match the colour and just paint the bonnet, or they will paint the bonnet and blow it in to the wing's and possibly the bumper so that you get a better colour match! ;D

  10. id go breakers as a mech for this fix...bodyshops will charge you up for this one unless there honest and trusting blokes....if a body shop quotes over 300 thats still steep......online breakers are cool ,just take advice and steer clear of the bodyshops!unless you want a full respray or dents pulling

  11. Problem is all the breakers I have look at so far don't have a bonnet in the right colour ... bonnets tend to be the bits that are crumpled up, and I have a crumpled bonnet as it is :D

Although it is just over 8 years old it has around 70k miles on the clock so is low mileage and has yet to breakdown on me (fingers crossed, touch wood etc etc) and my intention is that it will be running around for many years to come (unless I win the lottery (which I don't do) or our daughter miraculously stops growing (unlikely given she is 7!) so that I have cash to spend on a car ... more exciting things to buy that cars!) so it does look like getting a new bonnet (which is around £100) and the colour matched up is the best way to go.

I have a crime number from the police so can go through the insurance if needs be, the no claims are protected, but it isn't worth the hassle if I can get a sensible quote!

I've also been recommended someone by a friend who I need to call as well.
