A friend of mine who now lives in Sydney suggested that just like the Greenland settlers in the early Middle ages eventually died off when the climate changed to colder, the European settlement of Australia since James Cook has taken place during an unusually cool and wet period that is now returning to its normal hot and dry climate.

 

That sounds entirely sensible.
