Horn wiring issues 1972 crossover.

  1. Hi all.

I am working through rewiring my horn press as the p'o had wired a switch into the dash board. I have been trying to reinstate the earth wire that runs down inside the steering shaft, I have fitted a new length of wire with a new ring lug terminal on it as the old wire was a little toasty. I refitted the steering column with the ring terminal under the nut (steering box side) if that makes sense. However once refitted I tested the continuity between my new wire and the body of the van and I have no continuity. I have since removed the steering shaft again and tested at the input shaft of the steering box. It seems as though I don't have a ground connection through the steering box, the casing of the steering box is grounded though. Is there possibly something missing that would create a connection between the input shaft and the steering box casing?
    Thanks in advance.

  2. My horn uses a sanwa arcade button on the dashboard. Sometimes when I press it in a certain combination, my van does a special move.

  6. Ha ha. It did used to have a dash mounted button, but I bought new shiny posh steering wheel with horn press and figured I would get that working. I also pushed the old button through the dash in a blind rage because someone dashed out in front of me....

  7. There is a rubber steering coupler at the bottom of the column that might be insulating your wire

The wire goes to the bolt that is connected to the steering box. The coupler is meant to insulate the metal tube from the steering box. Basically all of the metal in the steering column tubes is connected to the negative side of the horn. The positive side of the horn is connected to the ignition 12 volts.

Press the button on the top of the steeing wheel, it connects the brown ground wire that pokes out the top to the steering column metalwork, making the circuit down the brown wire and through the steering box. The horn should sound if you ground any of the two concentric centre tubes of the stering column.

Forgive those that have push button on the dash for they lack the confidence to wire it correctly.... or they have lost the wire to the tag inside the plastic bell at the bottom of the column that goes to the horn

  9. As mentioned the steering box casing is showing continuity to ground but the input shaft of the steering box is not, I was wondering whether there is meant to be something connecting the input shaft to casing. But in the same breath I was kind of expecting there to be steel bearings in the steering box that would create a path. As for the dash buttons.... I am slowly trying to undo all the fixes the previous owners had expertly made.
